Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs were in control from start to finish on Friday night, laying the lumber to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Lewiston scored one in the first, four in the second, and two in the third, receiving two goals from Etienne Brodeur, and 25 saves from Nicholas Champion. In the end, the MAINEiacs rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Drakkar in front of 1,611 fans at Centre Henry Leonard.
The MAINEiacs struck first, picking up a goal late in the first period. Bryce Milson won a puck battle in the right corner, before tossing a pass out to Zach Shannon at the point. Shannon fired a shot toward the goal that got batted around in front by Alex Zafiris. The rebound eventually found its way to Milson, who slammed home his eighth goal of the season.
In the second period, Lewiston's offense exploded, lighting the lamp four times. The first marker came 1:36 in, when Etienne Brodeur took a drop pass from Pierre-Olivier Morin, before missing wide of the goal. However, the puck bounced around, and eventually found its way in for Brodeur's 51st of the campaign. Less than three minutes, that same line created the magic, as Morin put a hit on a player in the corner. The puck squirted out to Brodeur, who found Kirill Kabanov in front. Kabanov's first attempt got blocked, but he converted on the second for a 3-0 lead. Later in the period, another hit created a tally, as Jess Tanguy played the body, took the puck, and connected with Sam Henley, who smacked in his 13th of the year. Sam Carrier rounded out the scoring in the second period, wiring home a one-timer off of a feed from Olivier Dame-Malka at the left point.
The visitors added two more tallies in the third period, as Etienne Brodeur and Michael Chaput got the best of backup goaltender Simon Giroux for a 7-0 victory.
Nicholas Champion picked up his second shutout of the season, while also tying Jonathan Bernier for the most wins in a single season in franchise history (27). Champion made 25 saves, including 15 in the first period. Jason Missiaen took the loss for Baie-Comeau, allowing five goals on 26 shots in two periods. Simon Giroux took over in the third period, stopping seven of the nine shots he faced.
The MAINEiacs will conclude the 2010-11 regular season on Sunday afternoon at 4:00, when they visit the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Lewiston will begin the playoffs at home, tentatively scheduled for Friday and Saturday night the 25th and 26th of March.
