MAINEiacs Join Tigres as Road Winners to Start Round 2
April 11, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Two games are in the books in the second round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs, and once again, the battle is most certainly on. The Lewiston MAINEiacs and Montreal Junior split the first two games of their series over the weekend, as the Junior won Friday's opener 6-5 in overtime, before the MAINEiacs bounced back with a 6-2 victory in game two on Saturday.
Game one was a back-and-forth affair. Trevor Parkes netted a pair of goals for Montreal, only to see Lewiston's Matt Bissonnette answer with two of his own for a tie game at the end of one period of play. In the second period, the MAINEiacs tallied twice, as Olivier Dame-Malka and Bissonnette found the twine, with Bissonnette recording his first career hat trick. In the third period, Louis Leblanc, Philippe Lefebvre, and Louis-Marc Aubry turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead for the Junior, before Michael Chaput knotted things with 30 seconds to go. In overtime, David Rose provided the heroics for Montreal.
One afternoon later, the teams were right back at it for game two, which was even for the first 52 minutes of play. Olivier Dame-Malka had two goals for the MAINEiacs at that point, while Charles-Olivier Roussel and Jeremy Gouchie scored for the Junior. However, Dame-Malka and company had the final say, as the Lewiston defender blasted home two more goals, while being joined on the scoresheet by Antoine Houde-Caron and Pierre-Olivier Morin.
Nicholas Champion and Jean-Francois Berube were the netminders for both games, with Champion's record going to 5-2 and Berube's going to 5-1.
The MAINEiacs and Junior will play games three and four in Lewiston on Tuesday and Wednesday, with both games starting at 7:00.
Other Series in the QMJHL
#1 Saint John Sea Dogs (1) vs. #11 Victoriaville Tigres (1)
The series between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Victoriaville Tigres got started exactly how most people expected it to, as the Sea Dogs picked up a 4-1 win in game one. However, game two was a different story, as Phillip Danault scored a power play goal with three minutes left in regulation, lifting the visiting Tigres to a 3-2 win at Harbour Station - the first regulation home loss for Saint John all season. Jacob DeSerres and David Honzik each went 1-1 between the pipes, with Honzik stopping 80 of the 83 shots he faced for Victoriaville.
#3 Quebec Remparts (2) vs. #7 Shawinigan Cataractes (0)
The Shawinigan Cataractes might have let the excitement of hosting the 2012 Memorial Cup get to them too much, as they faced the Quebec Remparts in the first two games of their series. Quebec trounced Shawinigan 8-1 and 5-1 in two games at Colisee Pepsi to open up a 2-0 series lead. Four different Remparts recorded multiple points in the series opener, while five different players lit the lamp in game two. Goaltender Louis Domingue was put to the test, but came out successful with 64 saves on 66 shots for Quebec.
#4 Drummondville Voltigeurs (2) vs. #5 Gatineau Olympiques (0)
Offense looked like it would be the name of the series between the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Gatineau Olympiques, but so far, the defenses have made for the stories. In game one, the Voltigeurs had a 2-1 lead late, before Jonathan Brunelle added some insurance for a 3-1 win. Then, in game two, Jerome Raymond's two goals served as plenty of support for Guillaume Nadeau, who turned aside 27 shots for a 3-0 shutout win and a 2-0 series lead for Drummondville.
