University of Maine baseball player Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) was honored by America East on Monday for the Black Bears' record-setting performance over the weekend by being named the America East Rookie of the Week.
The Black Bears exploded for 76 runs in their weekend series sweep of UMBC, including setting a school and America East record by scoring 32 runs in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday. Maine also set a school record for doubles in a game with nine in the second game on Saturday.
Heath hit .476 last week with eight runs scored and seven RBI. He had three doubles on the week for the Black Bears. Heath finished with a .560 on-base percentage and a .619 slugging percentage. In Maine's 32-14 win over the Retrievers, Heath went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI.
2009 Mohawk 2B Sclafani Named Ivy League Player of Week
Joe Sclafani, a senior shortstop for Dartmouth, from Palm City, Fla., hit .476 (10-of-21) in the five games last week with three doubles, two triples and a home run while scoring seven runs and driving in six. His first three-bagger gave him 17 in his career, breaking the Dartmouth all-time record that had stood for 29 years. His second triple not only tied the Ivy League career mark, but also was the 200th hit of his career, one of just five Big Green players to reach the milestone and one of 17 Ivy League players to amass 200. His performance in the first Ivy League game of the weekend set the tone for the Big Green, tripling and scoring the first run, tying the game in the fourth with a two-run homer, then smacking a single to drive in the winning run in the sixth of the 6-3, seven-inning victory over Penn. Dartmouth won three of the four Ivy games over the weekend, vaulting into first place in the Rolfe Division.
