
Mahbod and Riopel win TELUS player of the week awards

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, September 15, 2008 - Drummondville Voltigeurs forward Samson Mahbod and Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from September 11 to 14.
In two road wins, Mahbod registered four goals, including a game-winner, and two assists while maintaining a +5 (plus/minus) differential. In the opening game of the 2008-09 season, the right-winger collected a hat-trick and an assist in a 6-3 win over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens to earn first star honours. The next day, he registered two more points in a 9-4 rout of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
Dave Labrecque (Cataractes), Ted Stephens (Wildcats) and Nick Layton (Junior) were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Wildcats backstop Nicola Riopel. In two games, he earned two wins while posting a 1.50 goals-against-average and .949 save percentage. Friday, in his first start of the season, he made 24 stops as Moncton defeated PEI 8-2. The following night, Riopel pushed away 32 shots in a 3-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs. He was later named the game's second start. Of note, the Wildcats' defensive brigade did not allow a goal in 13 power-play opportunities.
Gabriel Lemieux (Cataractes), Ryan Kavanagh (Océanic) and Nicalos Champion (Titan) were also strong candidates.
