The Toronto Lynx continued their USL First Division campaign, playing to a 2-2 draw in front of 3,392 at Centennial Park Stadium on a hot and humid afternoon. Former Lynx and recent Tottenham Hotspur signing Paul Stalteri was on hand for the ceremonial coin toss and a meet and greet with fans, as was Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer, Dr. Tom Fried for the ceremonial kickoff.
Toronto came close to scoring in the 1st minute when Sean Fraser broke through Charleston's defense only to be denied by Battery goalkeeper Mike Behonik.
Charleston went ahead on the next play when Chris Goos tapped Kevin Jackson's cross first time off the left post and in.
Toronto tied in 20th minute through Jamie Dodds' second goal in two games. Dodds picked up the ball 30 yards out, ran in and sent in a low hard shot from just inside the area. Charleston âkeeper Mike Behonik got a hand to it, but could not keep it out.
Toronto came close in the 27th minute when Jeremie Piette headed Dodds' corner, forcing Behonik into a diving save.
Charleston almost retook the lead in the 36th minute when Jesus Martinez found himself alone in front of goal, only to be denied by Lynx âkeeper Goddard. Unfortunately, Goddard was injured on the play and would be replaced at halftime by Theo Zagar.
It was 1-1 after 45 minutes.
Charleston were reduced to 10 men when Drew Kop was shown a red card after he brought down Sean Fraser just outside the 18 yard box. Dodds took the fee kick but put it over the bar.
Charleston retook the lead in the 59th minute when Alon Lebezky picked up Martinez's pass deep inside Toronto's area and shot passed Zagar and into the roof of the net.
Toronto made the most of their numerical superiority, and applied pressure to Charleston's end of the field for most of the last half hour. Jamie Dodds' shot from 20 yards out came off of Behonik's post in the 87th minute.
Toronto equalized deep into injury time. Sita Tatay Matondo picked up Sean Fraser's pass inside Charleston's box, slipping the ball past Behonik sending fans at Centennial Park Stadium into a frenzy.
It was 2-2 as the full time whistle sounded.
Toronto improved to 1-8-5 as a result of today's match, and will hope to continue their momentum when they host the Seattle Sounders on July 16th at Centennial Park Stadium.
Notes: Toronto entered today's match with a record of of 1-8-4. Their first win of the season came on the road on June 24th when they defeated Minessota 2-1. Charleston were fresh off their 1-0 defeat last night in Rochesster, and brought a record of 5-8-2 into today's encounter. Toronto had traditionally not faired well against Charleston, with an all-time record of 2-9-0 against the Battery. The last match between both clubs in Toronto ended 2-0 in Charleston's favour back in July of 2004.
