Lynx Lose First Instalment of USL-1 Canadian Derby

The Toronto Lynx lost their second match of the season tonight, dropping a 2-0 result away to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Toronto experienced considerable pressure in the first half as Vancouver registered 8 shots, while Toronto only managed 2. Lynx 'keeper Theo Zagar made three saves throughout the first half but was beaten right before the halftime whistle. In injury time Joseph Gjertsen blasted into Toronto's goal from 10 yards out after after Alfredo Valente's cross was ineffectually palmed away by Zagar.
Toronto came out from the break looking for an equalizer and immediately attacked Vancouver's goal. Toronto's efforts were continuously denied by Vancouver goalkeeper Josh Wicks who was impressive in goal tonight. Toronto had an excellent chance to equalise in the 72nd minutes off of a corner, but Wicks denied Menezes' header from the set-piece. Vancouver made it 2-0 against the run of play in the 82nd minute when former Lynx forward Sita-Taty Matondo picked up a loose ball outside of Toronto's box and fired a shot from 20 yards out past Zagar. It was 2-0 to Vancouver after 90 minutes.
The Lynx were bolstered by the addition of new players to the squad this evening. Veteran defender Rick Titus returned from last season while Canadian U-20 international Brian Chin made his debut for Toronto. Former Brazilian U-20 international and Vasco de Gama midfielder Neto also made his debut in Lynx colours.
Tonight's match was the first game played towards the Voyagers Cup. The Voyagers Cup is awarded each season by the Voyagers - Canada's national soccer fan club. The Cup is awarded to the best Canadian team playing in the USL First Division based on points earned in matches between all three Canadian clubs.
Toronto's next game will be their home opener against the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Saturday May 13th at Centennial Park Stadium. The match gets underway at 4:00 PM.
Notes: Tonight's match was both clubs second this season. Toronto dropped its first game 2-0 away to Virginia Beach while Vancouver won its first 1-0 at home against the Portland Timbers. Toronto had a record of 0-1-1 against Vancouver last season. The last match between both clubs at Swangard ended 0-0 in April of 2005.
