Lynx Feel the Heat on the Beach

The Toronto Lynx opened their 10th season this evening dropping a 2-0 result away to the Virginia Beach Mariners.

The match kicked off with to a wet pitch and the threat of severe weather, but it was Virginia and not the clouds that struck first. In the 17th minute Felix Brillant sent a cross into Toronto's box which Greg Simmonds volleyed past Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar and into the left of goal. Virginia Beach continued to press Toronto's defence throughout the first half, recording six shots to Toronto's two and forcing Zagar to make four saves. Toronto trailed 1-0 at the break.

Virginia increased their lead 25 minutes after the restart. Simmonds was on target again after receiving Ryan Mack's cross and beating Zagar with a low strike. The score remained 2-0 after 90 minutes.

Lynx ‘keeper Theo Zagar was busy all night facing 13 shots and making 7 saves. Toronto was outshot 13-4 through 90 minutes of play.

Tonight's Lynx team was one full of new and returning faces. Head Coach Duncan Wilde returned as head of the Lynx' senior squad after spending time with the youth development program. Theo Zagar, Andres Arango, Joe Matachione, Chris Williams, Huffman Eja-Tabe, Jamie Dodds, and Dave Diplacido returned from 2005's squad, while Marko Bedenikovic and Mathew Paleschi made their Lynx debuts. Darren Baxter returned wearing Lynx colours after not being part of 2005's campaign.

Toronto's next game is away to the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 29 for a 10:00 PM EST start. Toronto's home opener is on Saturday May 13th at 4:00 PM at Centennial Park Stadium.
