Luck Not for Diamonds Again, Lose 9-2

June 10, 2012 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - Carolina Diamonds News Release

Akron, Ohio - Luck evaded the Carolina Diamonds again Sunday as they wrapped up their first road trip of the National Pro Fastpitch softball season with a 9-2 loss to the Akron Racers.

"We had the same amount of hits as Akron did but we didn't have a lot of timely hits. We had a lot of runners in scoring position but when we did hit the ball we hit right at people. We are going to have to learn that home runs happen and we need to hit a lot more hard ground balls and line drives," Diamonds head coach Teresa Wilson said.

While both teams gave up seven hits apiece, the Diamonds (1-3) were unable to utilize their base runners and create runs like their Akron (3-1) counterparts. This held true until the fifth inning when Carolina center fielder Caitlin Lever got ahold of the ball for a double but advanced to third off an error. She was then driven in when designated hitter Rachel Folden blasted a shot over the center field fence.

Danielle Spaulding got her second start of the season and was relieved by Sara Plourde in the third inning before Sharon Palma come on in the fourth and held the Racers off the rest of the game. Diamonds pitchers allowed nine runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six with the defense giving up one error.

The loss caps off not only the first series of the season but also first away series for the Diamonds, who now return to prepare for their season opener Thursday night in Kannapolis at CMC-NorthEast Stadium against the Chicago Bandits.

"Me personally, as a coach, I don't want to leave anything behind. I want to learn from it and get better. If we continue to do the same thing we are going to continue to see the same results," Wilson said. "My goal is not to leave anything behind but to learn from it and get a little bit better each week so that by the end of the season we are a viable contender for anybody."

The Chicago Bandits (3-1) also defeated the USSSA Pride (1-3) Sunday, winning 5-2.
