Lovick nets a pair in 5-2 victory over Odessa

The Texas Tornado broke out of their offensive funk in Saturday night's game, equaling their goal output of the last four games combined with a 5-2 win over the Odessa Jackalopes. Reid Mimmack started in net and made 28 saves in his ninth victory of the season.
Odessa opened the game's scoring at 8:33 of the first period. After the Tornado won a faceoff in their defensive zone, they were unable to break out-- and lost control of the puck. Ostrowski intercepted a pass and skated to the high slot, where he rifled a wrist shot past the glove of Mimmack to give the Jackalopes a 1-0 lead.
Unlike Friday night's game, the Tornado were able to tie the score in relatively short order. After Taylor Herndon moved past a hip check along the boards in the neutral zone, Texas came into the Odessa zone on a 3-on-1. Jordan Lovick crossed the blue line with the puck, and thanks to some great stickhandling, took it all the way to the net and beat Davis to tie the score.
Less than two minutes later, a goal by Marc Biggs gave the Tornado the lead. Mychal Monteith took a wrist shot from the point with Biggs parked in front of the net. The Plano native was able to get his stick on the puck and redirected it past Davis to give the Tornado a 2-1 lead.
With just elapsed in the second period, Herndon scored for the second time since returning from a wrist injury to extend the Tornado's lead to two. Jackson Leef had the puck at the top of the right-wing circle and found Herndon at the backdoor with a snap pass to the far post. All Herndon had to do was tap it over the goal line, which he did to give the Tornado a 3-1 lead.
A quick wrist shot from Lawrence Cornellier at 8:52 cut the Tornado lead to a goal as the Jackalopes converted on the power-play for the only time of the night. Texas responded with a pair of goals before the second period came to a close. First, it was Jack Prince who scored to allow the Tornado to reclaim their two-lead. CJ Reuschlein threw a pass off the outside of the net, but it ricocheted out in front where Prince was waiting to put it past Davis for the goal. Just over three minutes later, Jordan Lovick gave Texas its lone power-play marker of the contest and extended the Tornado lead to their largest of the night. From the top of the circle, Lovick waited as long as he could before letting go a wrist shot that went high-blocker side on Davis to make it a 5-2 game.
Neither team could score in the third period, as the Tornado skated their way to their second straight victory. The Tornado hit the road immediately following the game and will be in Corpus Christi on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. faceoff against the Corpus Christi IceRays at AmericanBank Center.
