
Locomotion On Right Track At Season's Halfway Mark

At the halfway point of the 2003 National Women's Football Association season, it has been a season of firsts for the Chattanooga Locomotion women's full contact football team. A 4-0 start for the first time in the franchise's three year history has given the Locomotion a one game lead in the Central Division. The Locomotion start the second half of the season with a big showdown with the 3-1 Nashville Dream to be held at Chattanooga Central High School's Etter-Farmer Field on May 17, 2003 at 7:00 PM EDT.
The Locomotion offense has stepped up its play so far by averaging 292.5 yards of total offense per game (199.5 yards per game rushing, 93.0 yards per game passing) and scoring 41.0 points per game (164 total points scored).
Taking the lead on offense is rookie and NWFA MVP candidate Amanda Lebo. All Lebo has done so far is is rush for 314 yards on 41 carries (7.7 yards per carry), catch 5 passes for 193 yards (38.6 yards per catch), go 1 for 1 passing for 12 yards and a touchdown, return a punt for 23 yards, and return a pair of kickoffs for 17 yards. In all, Lebo has accounted for 547 all purpose yards (136.8 yards per game) and scored 67 points (11 touchdowns, 1 kicking conversion, 16.8 points per game). Lebo had a career day in week 2 against Knoxville where she had 18 carries for 180 yards, two catches for 121 yards, and six touchdowns.
Not to be out done by Lebo is second year player, Amanda Horner. Horner has rushed for 280 yards on 59 carries (4.7 yards per carry), passed for 58 yards, has 4 receptions for 78 yards (19.8 yards per catch), returned a punt for 11 yards, returned 4 kicks for 73 yards (18.3 yards per return), for a total of 442 all-purpose yards (110.5 yards per game), and has scored 36 points on 6 touchdowns (9.0 points per game)
Running the controls is a second year player making a comeback after blowing out her knee at this same time in the 2002 season in Melissa McCranie. Melissa has passed for 174 yards and three touchdowns and only one interception. She has also rushed for 122 yards on 17 carries (a 7.7 yards per carry average).
The "Purple Wall of Defense" has picked up from where it left off from the 2002 season. In allowing only 376 yards (312 yards rushing and 64 yards passing for an average 94.0 yards per game) and 38 points (9.5 points per game).
Keeping up their reputation as two of the top defenders in the NWFA are a couple of third year players, while a rookie is starting to make her mark in the league.
Middle linebacker and third year player Cayci Johnson has made 52 tackles (30 solo), made 3 interceptions, broken up 5 other passes, and recovered a fumble. Third year linebacker/safety Kerrin Parker has kept pace with 44 tackles (9 for loss), 2.0 sacks, 9 pass breakups, and a fumble recovery. Defensive End, Dee Dee Brook's who lead the league with 99 tackles in the 2002 season has 28 tackles (11 solo, 4 for a loss) 1 pass breakup, 1 forced fumble and 6 QB hurries so far this season. Rookie, outside linebacker Lori Moss has accounted for 30 tackles (16 solos, 8 for loss) 4.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, 6 QB hurries.
Long time Tennessee football coach General Robert R. Neyland called special teams the area of the game where most games are won or lost. Audrey Russell has been one of the key reasons behind the Locomotion's improvement with her kicking. She has connected on 18 of 20 extra point attempts and 1 of 2 field goal attempts (the made field goal being the game winner in the Week 1 game with the Asheville Assault in overtime) She has punted 14 times for a 26.4 average with a long of 39 and putting one punt inside the 20 yard line.
