FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton announced, Jan. 12, the signing of midfielder Nik Ledgerwood. Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alta., Ledgerwood has spent the the majority of his career in Europe while remaining a staple with the Canadian men's national soccer program.
Ledgerwood, 30, kicked off his professional career in 2002 with the now-defunct Calgary Storm before heading to Europe to compete. Since the 2002 season, the midfielder has played for a number of teams, including 1860 Munchen, FSV Frankfurt, Wehen Wiesbaden, Hammarby, MSV Duisburg and most recently Energie Cottbus. Ledgerwood matched his season-high appearances mark during the 2014-15 season with Cottbus (25).
"Nik is what I consider to be a modern Canadian professional," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. "Nik has 12 years of experience playing in Europe. For him, or any Canadian player to last as long as that takes some doing. It's not easy to play in Europe, especially as a Canadian player. That shows the type of character that Nik has and the type of character that he is."
Ledgerwood joined the Canadian national program at the U-17 level and has continued to be a regular in the national team lineup throughout his career. Since 2007, the Lethbridge native has 45 appearances with the senior team, including 15 appearances in World Cup qualifiers. Ledgerwood most recently featured with the national team in Round 3 of Canada's 2018 World Cup qualifying matches versus Belize.
"When I became interim head coach of the Canadian national team I had the chance to get to know Nik that little bit better," Miller added. "He was one that was so reliable and we will look at him to be a central midfield player for us. Nik will give us experience, he will give us tenacity and he will raise the bar in terms of the level of professionalism and experience at the club."
With over a decade of experience in the professional ranks and at the international level, Ledgerwood's addition to the Eddies roster could spell big things for the club in 2016.
"I think this is quite a significant signing for the Eddies," Miller concluded. "Nik is a current Canadian international, a well-established international and I am very, very excited. I think our fans will take to Nik because of the qualities that he brings to the team."
Ledgerwood and the Eddies embark on their 2016 North American Soccer League campaign in early Spring. To purchase your 2016 Season Tickets, please call 780.700.2600 or click HERE. For more information on FC Edmonton, please visit www.fcedmonton.com.
