New York Lizards News Release

UNIONDALE, NY -- On October 30, 2006, the Long Island Lizards will kickoff their "Literacy Lounge," a program focused on promoting literacy to the community's youth. Lizard executives, along with Spike the mascot, will be joining the Islip School District, making appearances at both Commack Road and Sherwood Elementary, to read excerpts from Neil Duffy's "The Spirit in the Stick" as part of the franchises "Kick-off" celebration.

"Literacy Lounge," which runs until February 28, 2007, was created with the purpose of cultivating reading awareness. In an effort to obtain this, the Lizards are looking to partner with interested schools to encourage students to incorporate reading into their daily routine, hoping to stress the "fundamental role" that literacy plays in students' development.

For each school that takes part, students will receive official "Literacy Lounge" reading logs, which will be used to track individuals daily reading minutes. The goal for students is to amass the most reading minutes individually, as a class and finally as a school each month. As part of the incentive, prizes will be awarded to a student from each school and a class from the entire program who has accumulated the most minutes each month. The child will receive a Lizards T-shirt, and the class will be awarded tickets to a Lizards home game. The ultimate goal however, is to be the one school that has accumulated the most minutes read for the four month span of the program. The school, who receives this honor, will be recognized at halftime of the first Lizards home game of 2007.

The Long Island Lizards are aware that there are numerous distractions available to today's youth that have diverted both children's attention and interest from more traditional activities such as reading. The franchise is hopeful though that with a little incentive students will be willing to actively participate in promoting literacy, and be just as enthused about it as the Lizards are.
