Lizards team up with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
January 15, 2007 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
New York Lizards News Release
Uniondale, NY (January 15, 2007) -- The Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse kicked off their partnership with the Long Island Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society last week with an assembly at North Country Road Middle School in Miller Place. The Lizards and the LLS are specifically partnering up for the School & Youth's Pennies for Patients® Program.
School & Youth's Pennies for Patients® encourages children to collect spare change to help fund research seeking cures for leukemia, which causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20, lymphoma and myeloma. Students across the country are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters during the three-week period in which the program runs to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Last year nearly $15 million was raised nationally through this program alone.
This year the Long Island school that raises the most money through the program will be honored at halftime of a Long Island Lizards home game and will be visited by a Lizards player during the school year.
"This program is absolutely phenomenal," said Dave Kotowski, President of the Long Island Lizards. "Blood Cancer is an epidemic in this country and Pennies for Patients® allows the kids to get involved and really help out others, which is a fantastic lesson to learn at such a young age."
Long Island Lizards partner Commerce Bank also plays a tremendous role in the program as they have donated all of the coin banks to the Long Island Chapter of the LLS that will be used in the program.
