New York Lizards News Release
Three veteran members of the Long Island Lizards were hired by the Anaheim Storm of the National Lacrosse League today. Lizards Team Captain Pat McCabe was hired as Head Coach of the team, while Kevin Finneran was named Offensive Assistant Coach. Steve Sombrotto will serve as General Manager of the club. All three players were members of the Lizards since the league's inception in 2001, playing in three consecutive Major League Lacrosse Championship Games, and winning the title in 2001 and 2003.
McCabe coached the New York Saints in 2003 before the team folded this offseason. Pat played his entire eleven-year pro indoor career in a Saints uniform, scooping 635 loose balls in 114 games and recording 23 goals and 61 assists. A native of Elmont, Pat currently resides in Oceanside with his wife and two daughters. McCabe was a four-time All-American at Syracuse University, graduating in 1991. In McCabe is also the Defensive Coach at C.W. Post.
Finneran makes debut behind the bench after playing thirteen seasons indoors, including ten for the Philadelphia Wings. Nicknamed "Ironman" for playing 143 consecutive games, not including an astonishing 20 postseason games, Finneran retired from his playing career after capturing the NLL Championship for the fifth time, with the Toronto Rock last Spring.
Sombrotto becomes the teams General Manager after a wrist injury sidelined the start of his thirteenth pro indoor season. Sombrotto played for the Saints for ten years before signing with the New Jersey Storm in 2002, following the team to Anaheim this year.
McCabe and Finneran replace Head Coach Peter Vipond and Assistant Coach Jeff Dowling respectively. Former General Manager, Jim Brady, will be retained as the Director of Player Personnel.
The World Champion Long Island Lizards kick off the 2004 season on Saturday, May 22nd, when they take on the Boston Cannons at Boston University's Nickerson Field at 7:00 PM. Lizards home games are played at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. The Lizards are offering a $75 season ticket special for all orders placed before February 29th.
