
Lizards Outscore Philadelphia, 19-14

The Long Island Lizards (2-1) defeated the Philadelphia Barrage (1-1) in front of 3,012 fans at Villanova Stadium on Saturday evening. Chris Massey was named Bud Light MVP, as he led the Lizards with a career-high five goals and one assist. The Lizards scored the first four goals of the game, and never trailed, cruising to their first American Division win of the season.
Jay Jalbert (3 goals, 3 assists), Blake Miller (2 goals, 3 assists), A.J. Haugen (2 goals, 1 assist) and Matt Panetta (3 goals) were impressive on offense for Long Island. Nick Murtha earned his first win of the season in goal, with 11 saves. Rookie Jack deVilliers was impressive in his MLL debut, winning 19 of 34 faceoffs.
The first half was a series of runs by each team, as Long Island jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, starting with back-to-back goals from Matt Panetta in the first 1:20. However, the Barrage rallied and went on a 4-1 to cut the score to 5-4 Lizards after the first quarter. The Lizards again went on a big run, scoring five straight goals to start the second quarter, but Philadelphia came back again with four straight, cutting the score to 10-8. Chris Massey scored with 57 seconds remaining in the half to give the Lizards an 11-8 lead at halftime.
The runs ended in the third quarter, as the teams traded goals, scoring four apiece to make the score 15-12 Long Island with 15 minutes to play. Boyle scored to start the fourth cutting the Lizards lead to 15-13, but Panetta answered right back with his third goal of the game. Chris Massey followed it up with his fifth goal of the game, but Matt Striebel countered it with a goal of his own to cut the score to 17-14.
Rookie Chazz Woodson scored a dazzling goal with four minutes remaining, the first of his career, to give the Lizards a dominating 18-14 lead. Tim Goettelmann capped it with an empty-netter with 1:28 remaining, and the Lizards cruised to their first American Division win of the season.
Philadelphia was led by Ryan Boyle (3 goals, 2 assists), Matt Striebel (3 goals, 1 assist), Mike Springer (2 goals, 2 assists) and Mike Mollot (2 goals, 2 assists). Brian Dougherty recorded 20 saves in goal.
Long Island has a bye week, before they meet their Division Rivals, the Boston Cannons (2-0) at Nickerson Field on June 18th. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
