New York Lizards News Release
On July 22nd at 8pm, The Long Island Lizards will take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks at James M. Shuart Stadium on the Campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. The second matchup of the season between these teams will help to clear up the championship weekend picture. The Bayhawks fell to the Boston Cannons last Saturday at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium by a score of 16-10. The Bayhawks came out sluggish, falling behind 9-0 to start the game. Perennial all-star goalie, Chris Garrity, was pulled from action and replaced by backup Mike Levin early in the first quarter. This most recent loss lands the Bayhawks at 4-5, yet still in the playoff mix.
The Bayhawks began the 2010 season on fire, winning four of their first five games. However, this is a completely different team from the seemingly unstoppable one seen early this season. The Bayhawks have lost their last four contests and now find themselves one game under .500 and tied for fourth in the league standings. They have shown flashes of brilliance, scoring 25 goals in week two against the Toronto Nationals but have sputtered as of late. A new addition to the squad this year is attackman Chazz Woodson. The six-year pro and Brown University graduate was brought here via trade from Chicago in Mid-June. This flashy offensive threat is known for his acrobatic finishing around the goal. Unfortunately, since his debut with the club, the Bayhawks have failed to win a game. A major off-field move was made just this week with the addition of Dave Cottle. Recently departed from Maryland University, Cottle has been brought on as a consultant in all aspects of Chesapeake's roster and game strategies.
The Lizards last met the Bayhawks in Annapolis, MD in week one. The Lizards were defeated 18-6. Long Island jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but quickly fell behind 4-2 to end the first quarter. From then on, it was all Chesapeake. Two major points will need to be addressed if the Lizards plan on taking revenge for the early season loss. First, the Lizards will have to limit the two point goals. This comes down to Lizards Goalie Drew Adams who allowed three of them in the Week one contest but has played excellent between the pipes as of late. Second, the Lizards must contain all-star midfielder Peet Poillon who dominated the last meeting, netting 5 goals and dishing 2 assists. If the Lizards can accomplish these two things, they will have an excellent chance of winning along with moving one step closer to a playoff berth.
