New York Lizards News Release
Denver, Colorado - The New York Lizards fell to the Denver Outlaws in overtime on a scorching hot day out in Mile High Stadium, 15-14.
Rob Pannell and Matt Gibson led the Lizards with five points each on the night. Pannell had one goal and four assists, while Gibson had four goals and one assist. JoJo Marasco and Tommy Palasek each finished with three points, while Kyle Hartzell and Paul Rabil had two a piece.
The first quarter started off with a Greg Gurenlian win off the faceoff leading to a Matt Gibson goal right on the doorstep just 17 seconds into the game. Denver rebounded immediately, scoring just under a minute later on a nifty behind-the-back goal by Drew Snider to even the game at one a piece. After a mid-quarter run by the Lizards, the end of the first saw New York on top 5-3.
Gurenlian continued his dominant season-long faceoff performance, going 16-30 on the day, a 53 percent total. After his performance against Denver, Gurenlian's final regular season faceoff percentage sits at 73 percent.
Paul Rabil kicked off the second quarter for the Lizards with an unassisted goal 1:06 into the quarter on his former college teammate at Johns Hopkins, Jesse Schwartzman. Perhaps the most impressive tally of the quarter came from newcomer Chris LaPierre, beating everyone on the sprint downfield and stinging a goal far pipe for his first career goal as a Lizard.
The offense was the story of the first half, as the Lizards poured in 11 goals, taking the lead into the halftime locker room 11-6.
A defensive-heavy third quarter resulted in a slow offensive output- just two goals were scored the whole quarter. Rabil stuck his second of the game from a Rob Pannell assist, one of his four of the game.
The final stanza was all Denver, as they outscored the Lizards 7-2 and came back from a 12-7 deficit after the third quarter to send the game to overtime. Michael Bocklet led the way for Denver with three goals in the quarter.
In overtime, Denver's Drew Snider stuck his fifth of the game for the game winner, eclipsing a comeback victory for the Outlaws. The loss puts the Lizards at a final regular season record of 10-4 and the Outlaws at 7-7.
The Lizards will host their first ever home playoff game on Saturday, August 1st at 6:30 p.m. Tune in to CBS Sports Network or ESPN3 for game coverage, or buy tickets at NYLizards.com/Playoffs or call 1-855-NYLizards.
