Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Austin Listi extended his on-base streak to 20 games, but the Threshers fell short in a 5-2 loss on Education Day on Wednesday morning at Spectrum Field.

Listi walked twice to push his on-base streak to 20 straight games. Listi holds the highest on-base percentage in the FSL.

Palm Beach (23-15) got on the board in the first after Kramer Robertson walked to start off the inning and Evan Mendoza sent a single to right to move Robertson to third. A sacrifice fly to center field from Johan Mieses scored the run, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.

J.B. Woodman hit a solo homerun over the left field wall in the second inning, and Shane Billings added his first homer of the season to a similar spot in the third.

Mendoza scored one more for Palm Beach in the third after he reached on a line drive past the glove of shortstop Jose Gomez. Back-to-back hits by Mieses and Andrew Young scored the run. A pair of quick fly outs stranded the runners and limited the damage to a 4-0 lead.

The Threshers (16-23) cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning. Mickey Moniak reached on a infield hit toward second, and was moved over on a walk drawn by Edgar Cabral. Jose Pujols sent an RBI double off the wall in right to score Moniak, and a fielder's choice allowed Cabral to cross the plate and push the score to 4-2.

The Cardinals tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning after doubles by Brian O'Keefe and Woodman allowed O'Keefe to score, extending the Palm Beach lead to 5-2.

Clearwater threatened in the ninth, when Listi and Hall both drew walks to start off the inning, and Cabral singled on a fly ball to right field to load the bases with only one out. Austin Sexton worked around the bases-loaded situation, striking out Pujols for the second out, and getting Gomez to ground into a force out to end the game.

Starter Nick Fanti (0-1) took the loss for the Threshers, giving up four runs on six hits, striking out one, and allowing one walk in his four-inning season debut.

McKenzie Mills came in to start the fifth in his first relief appearance since 2015. Mills gave up one run on three hits, striking out three and allowing two walks in his three innings.

Aaron Brown worked two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and allowing one walk.

Clearwater and Palm Beach finish up the four-game series in Clearwater on Thursday. Mauricio Llovera (2-2) is on the hill against Anthony Shew (3-1) with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Kirsten Karbach will be on the call starting at 6:45 p.m for the Threshers Broadcast Network.
