Lincoln DB Staples done for Season

June 10, 2002 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) - Lincoln Capitols News Release

The injury bug has again hit the Lincoln Capitols’ defense, as defensive back Heath Staples will not be available to the team the remainder of the year. Staples has been playing with a cracked T-6 vertebrae in his back, and learned Friday that he is also suffering from a bulging disc near that vertebrae, ending his season.

Staples, a three-year indoor veteran out of Doane College, was among the team leaders in tackles with 70 in 9 games played and had picked off a pass in four of the last five games. He had eclipsed the 10-tackle mark in a trio of games this season, making 11 tackles all three times.

“He was definitely a coach on the field for us,” said Capitols’ head coach Jose Jefferson. “Any time you lose someone who directs traffic like he did, it’s a huge adjustment.”

Staples had shifted to free safety from cornerback with the loss of Troy Watchorn to a knee injury earlier this season.

The Ogallala, NE, native, led arenafootball2 last season with 125 tackles and set an individual game record by making 17 stops in a contest.
