California Cougars News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Jan. 28, 2009 - Stockton Cougars player/head coach Bernie Lilavois became the first player in Stockton arena soccer history to score six goals in one match on Wednesday night at Stockton Arena. Lilavois added one assist to his six goals for a game high seven points during Stockton's 13-6 win against the last place Wenatchee Fire.

The Cougars (7-3) lead the Western Division standings by two and three games over Denver and Colorado respectively. Their magic number to clinch the Western Division is now four with six Professional Arena Soccer League games remaining. The loss dropped Wenatchee to a league worst 1-9 on the year.

Despite the lopsided result, Wenatchee did hold an early lead in the match. Felix Robles and Alex Megson helped the Fire jump out to a 2-0 lead through the mid-point of the first quarter. But, the Cougars quickly countered and went on a five goal run that gave them a 5-2 advantage in the second quarter.

Lilavois was the first Stockton player to find the back of the net as he connected on a ball sent to him by Nelson Santana in the later portion of the second quarter. His goal with 2:54 remaining was then followed by Santana's gorgeous spinning strike that tied the match with :59 left in the first frame.

The Cougars took the lead in the second when Renato Dos Reis scored with 12:01 left in the second quarter. The streak continued for Stockton as Ato Leone knocked in a ball given to him by Aaron Susi with 11:49 left in the half. Lilavois then followed with another goal at the 7:12 mark. The streak, however, ended when Rafa Garcia scored with 6:21 remaining.

Stockton quickly answered the Garcia goal when Susi connected on his first of two goals at the 4:05 mark of the quarter. Like Susi's goal, Majell Aterado scored a power play goal with 2:37 left in the half. Aterado's was also the game winner.

Stockton took the 7-2 lead to the half and went on to add six more goals to their winning total. It was the fourth time in PASL-Pro play that the Cougars scored seven or more goals before halftime. They have averaged 5.2 goals for in the first half this season.

Susi was the first Stockton player to score in the second half. His goal was then followed by four by Lilavois and one by Brian Farber.

The Cougars next play La RaZa de Monterrey in a Copa America match on Friday, January 30 at Arena Monterrey in Mexico. La RaZa is currently 6-5 in National Indoor Soccer League play and 3-0 in the Copa America tournament. The Cougars will also host La RaZa on Thursday, February 5 at Stockton Arena with the first kick at 7:15PM.

The February 5 game will feature a free halftime and post-game concert performance by Los Amos de Nuevo Leon courtesy of La Poderosa 107.9 FM. The band will be playing on the arena fan deck during halftime and for approximately a half hour following the match. The concert will be open to all fans who purchase a game ticket.

Tickets for the game start at just $10, and can be purchased online at stocktoncougars.net, or by phone at (209) 373-1550
