London Lightning News Release
(SUDBURY, ON) - The London Lightning headed to the Nickle City on Monday night to take on the home town Sudbury Five in a battle of the #1 and #2 seeds in the National Basketball League of Canada. In a matchup of what many feel are the two teams likely to meet in the finals, the Lightning improved to 19-4 on the season with the 120-104 victory.
Last time the Bolts took the hardwood in the Sudbury Community Arena it ended with one of their just four losses and the suspension of Lightning leader, Chris Jones for the remainder of the regular season. This time around, the Bolts featured a healthier and more complete roster that was able to jump out early on the undersized Five thanks to the length and skill of big man Amir Williams. Williams scored the first 10 points for the Lightning as they went to him early and often in the first quarter. London's lead would stand at 16 points after the first quarter as they outscored Sudbury 38-22.
London's lead would continue to grow in the second quarter behind 13 points from newcomer Jordan Burns. Burns led the way on both ends of the floor for the Bolts as their half-time lead ballooned to 26 points heading into the break.
In typical Lightning fashion, their once nearly 20 point lead would slowly dissolve as Sudbury's potent offense would finally wake up. This time was Braylon Rayson leading the way with 12 points in the quarter as the Five would outscore London 32-22 and continue their run into the fourth. Sudbury eventually cut the lead to single digits before the Lightning were able to close out the game and earn the 16 point victory.
Newcomer Jordan Burns was named Player of the Game as he led all scorers with a 34 points on the night while hitting 7 threes and dishing out 6 assists. Leading MVP Candidate Cam Forte added another double-double to his season total with 26 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Amir Williams added 18 points on the night while Mareik Isom continued his improved play with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Canadians Jordan Jensen-Whyte and Jermaine Haley Jr both added 11 to round out the scoring for the Bolts.
The dynamic duo of Braylon Rayson (28 points) and Jaylen Bland (20 points) combined for an impressive 48 points on the night while shooting a pedestrian at best combined 17 of 37 from the field and an ice cold 7 of 25 from beyond the arc. Jeremy Harris and Marcel White added 13 and 10 points respectively.
