London Lightning News Release

(St. John's, NL) - The London Lightning returned to St. John's, Newfoundland for the first time since 2019 and picked up the 115-101 win in game one of three straight against the hometown Rogues of The Basketball League.

Just one day removed from travelling over 3200km, London got out to a slow start on both sides of the ball. Credit where credit is due as the Rogues jumped out quickly on the Bolts by taking a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes and forcing six Lightning turnovers in the first quarter. London would be able to answer moving forward and would end the quarter tied up at 25 points apiece.

The Lightning and Rogues continued to trade buckets throughout the second quarter. London would take a small lead before Newfoundland would go on a run and take the lead and vice-versa. After the second frame, London would hold a narrow one-point lead, 54-53.

As if following a script, the Lightning would show more life after the half and start the third quarter on a 13-2 run. Led by Terry Thomas and Mike Edwards, London would grow their lead to as many as 13 points in the third and never let the Rogues get closer than nine points for the remainder of the game. After being up 80-70 entering the fourth, London would continue to streak, leading by as many as 19 points before cruising to a comfortable 14-point victory.

Jordan Burns was the Lightning's leader on the night with a team-high 27 points on 50% shooting while dishing out a game-high 15 assists and collecting 8 rebounds. Third-year forward, Mareik Isom enjoyed his best game of the season scoring 19 points on an efficient 7-8 from the field. Mike Edwards (15 points), Terry Thomas (14 points) and newcomer Antwon Lillard (12 points) rounded out the scoring for the Lightning.

Newfoundland relied on the scoring prowess of guard Armani Chaney who led the game with 28 points while dishing 5 rebounds and stealing the ball 4 times. Brandon Johnson caught fire, hitting 5-8 from deep and scoring 25 points on the night.

London and the Rogues play two more games Friday and Saturday this week before the Bolts return home to London to host the Express on February 1st.
