(LONDON, Ontario) - The London Lightning will welcome 8,000 Thames Valley District School Board students to Budweiser Gardens for the first ever 'Be A Champ Day' on Thursday, February 5. The event will be hosted by Canadian performer and motivational speaker, Saidat.

"The Lightning are committed to winning both on and off the court," said Head Coach Carlos Knox. "The "˜Be A Champ Day' is a great way for us to connect with the youth of our community. The event is all about creating change and being an upstander in our society and truly reflects what we value as a franchise."

Students in grades five through eight, along with their teachers and administrators will be treated to this extraordinary day of education, entertainment, inspiration and fun. The students will hear motivational messages and performances from groups and individuals whom young people look up to, including Lightning Coach Carlos Knox, London Police Chief Brad Duncan, Western Mustangs Football Coach Greg Marshall, "The Doorman" Josh Yandt, Canadian entertainer Young Avz, and of course, the London Lightning. The event will also be the largest gathering of TVDSB students the city has ever seen.

""˜Be A Champ Day' is a celebration of students being Upstanders. The London Lightning are great role models for the community and continually showcase what it means to "˜Be A Champ'. I am very honoured to be a part of this premier event for the youth of London," said Saidat, the official host of "˜Be A Champ Day'.

As a special end to the day, lead sponsor TD Bank and the London Lightning donated 3,000 tickets to TVDSB students for the game against the Windsor Express. Tickets were awarded to the students who took the Upstander challenge throughout January. Those who demonstrated that they were Upstanders each earned a ballot for a draw at their school at the end of the month.

"At TD, we believe that every young person should have the opportunities and support they need to reach their full potential - to be young leaders, to be a Champ and to be Upstanders. Young people are our future, and as role models their actions can make positive impact wherever they go, at school, at home and their neighbourhoods. As sponsor of Be A Champ Day, we're proud to be working in partnership with the London Lightning and the School Board to inspire youth leadership in London." said Yvette Scrivener, Community Relations Manager, TD Bank.

Tip-off for the Lightning game against the Windsor Express is at 7:00 p.m.
