Lightning Edge out Mill Rats in OT

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats presented by Rogers, lost a tough battle in overtime to the #1 ranked team, the London Lightning with a final score of 109-106. The game took place on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station in front of 1,976 fans.

The Lightning bolted out of the gates early gaining a 14-0 lead over the Mill Rats, but Jerice Crouch ended their run with a three pointer with 7 minutes left in the first quarter. The Mill Rats battled back to close the first, 28-21.

With just over 9 minutes left before half, 2 back to back threes from Mill Rats' Antonio Burks tied the game, 34-34. The Mill Rats were able to take their first lead of the game with 6:30 on the clock, after a steal and a hoop from Crouch and a three pointer from Burks, 38-39.

Burks made it rain with 4 three pointers in the 2nd quarter alone, closing the gap, ending the half trailing behind the Lightning 53-47.

The Mill Rats came out hard in the third quarter, outscoring the Lightning 19-36. They were able to gain a double digit lead, but the Lightning battled back. Jerice Crouch closed the third with 2 after controlling the ball over defender DeAnthony Bowden, giving the Mill Rats a lead 72-83.

The Mill Rats were able to maintain their lead halfway through the fourth quarter until some missed free throws gave the Lightning a chance to catch up. After a 9 point run from the visiting team, 3:33 remained on the clock, 89-92. Lightning's Buford was able to sink 2 from the line, tying the game 96-96 which brought the game into overtime.

A put back from Lightning's Jeremy Williams was answered by Anthony Anderson. A three from Elvin Mims gave the Lightning a lead 101-98. The Mill Rats were not able to make their hoops count in the final seconds, giving the Lightning the overtime win, 109-106.

Leading scorers for the Mill Rats were Jerice Crouch with 28, Antonio Burks with 17 and Anthony Anderson with 16. The Lightning were led by Elvin Mims who netted 25 and Jeremy Williams who had a double double, with 22 points and 13 boards.

The Mill Rats fall to 11-11 on the season while the Lightning rise to 19-2.

The Mill Rats are back in action on Thursday night as they host the Halifax Rainmen at 7pm at Harbour Station.
