New York Liberty News Release
SUMMER SERIES: Tonight's game will bring the season series between the Liberty and Sparks to a close ... New York leads 1-0, and is seeking its fifth series win in the all-time history against Los Angeles.
LAST TIME AROUND: New York established its largest win streak of the season (three games) with a 80-68 victory over Los Angeles at the Staples Center on June 29 ... Cappie Pondexter and Taj McWilliams-Franklin combined for 33 points.
BENCHMARK: Kalana Greene, Plenette Pierson and Essence Carson came off the bench to combine for 41 of New York's 77 points in Tuesday's win over San Antonio ... The Silver Stars' reserves tallied just 10 points ... The rookie Greene registered a career-high 17 points, followed by Pierson's (the team's leading reserve scorer) 16 points and Carson's eight points in nine minutes of action ... The Liberty is 6-3 on the season when its bench outscores the opponents' reserves.
MOST IMPROVED MITCHELL: Leilani Mitchell has been having a breakout season in her new role for the Liberty ... This season thus far she's registered career highs in various categories ... She became just the second Liberty player (behind Teresa Weatherspoon) in franchise history to register seven steals in a game in the July 15 win over the Mystics ... The starting point guard has been effective on the offensive end as well, shooting .607-percent in the last five games from long range.
MILESTONE ON THE HORIZON: Entering tonight's game, Cappie Pondexter is 38 points away from scoring her 3,000th career point ... In her fifth season, Pondexter is ranked No. 34 on the league's all-time scoring list ... When the 27-year old, who is averaging 20.8 ppg this summer, reaches the career milestone, she will be the third youngest player in WNBA history to do so ... The Storm's Lauren Jackson did it at 25 years old in 2006 and the Mercury's Diana Taurasi achieved it at 26 years old in 2008.
