Legends Fall Short in Home Opener

April 19, 2005 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Canton Legends News Release

Despite a shaky start, the Canton Legends showed promise in their home opener on Sunday at the Canton Civic Center. The Legends' offense seemed to have a difficult time gelling in the Sunday opener against Raleigh, and, by the time it did, it was too late. The Legends failed to take advantage of two opportunities to get back in the Atlantic Indoor Football League's kickoff in Canton and lost their opener, 50-28.

Legends defensive back Hassen Brown gave his offense a chance to gain the edge in the first quarter. After quarterback Rob Adamson missed on his first three pass attempts, the Legends' attempted a field goal that was blocked, giving Raleigh the ball and the momentum early on in the contest, but Brown picked off Rebels quarterback Jared Hall on Raleigh's second play.

Adamson, completing 19-of-42 passes for 192 yards, was intercepted four times, three on tipped balls, including two that went off of receivers' hands.

Leading the charge for the Legends offense were Randall Knapp, who ended the game with 6 catches for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the first touchdown in Canton Legends' history, and Nick Sirianni, who tallied 9 catches for 69 yards.

The Legends also scored on the defensive side of the football when defensive lineman Brandon Hayes from the University of Pittsburgh blocked a Raleigh field goal attempt from 54 yards, quickly pouncing on the ball in the end zone for a Legends' touchdown, cutting the lead to 16 points and that was the closest the home team could get.

The Legends play their first road game this Saturday in Johnstown and will return home the following week when they take on the Erie Freeze on Saturday, April 30.
