Mississippi Surge owner Tim Kerr told a group of Surge fans that the Southern Professional Hockey League team is close to signing a two year lease agreement with the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Kerr addressessed the group of roughly 100 fans during a town hall style meeting Thursday night at the Misssissippi Coast Convention Center. While there are details to be ironed out, Kerr told the fans he is confident the two-year deal will be signed.
"One thing our recent ticket drive proved is this is your team out there," Kerr said. "You were the ones that sold 177 new season tickets, which is phenomenal."
A recent season ticket drive has raised the team's total to 740 season tickets. Kerr also announced the team has verbal commitments which will result in 50 tickets each game being donated to charity, and 25 tickets to military personnel.
"So that gets us to 815 season tickets, and we can reach our goal of one thousand by the time the season starts with your help," Kerr said.
Not only is the future of the Surge clearing up, the view from the Coliseum stands will also. Kerr said the Coliseum has been able to use a high powered buffer to clean scratches off the plexiglas which surrounds the playing surface. He said the team will also continue to work with Aramark, the concession company at the Coliseum to continue enriching the fan experience.
Along with Kerr, SPHL Coach of the Year Jeff Bes also addressed the crowd. He told fans players were excited about the success of the early off season ticket drive and thanked fans for making it happen. League commissioner Jim Combs was also on hand and expressed gratitude for the show of support for the Surge and the SPHL.
Kerr said the team will continue building its season ticket base, and also work to grow its corporate partnerships.
The Surge team store is also holding a major merchandise sale right now. The store is open for business Monday through Friday at the Coast Coliseum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
