League Title Eludes Aztex; Montreal Awaits in Playoffs

Austin Aztex News Release

An early Montreal goal, followed by a red card on Randi Patterson all but ended the Austin Aztex title hopes in the 2010 USSF D-2 Pro League regular season, but even with the 2-0 loss at Saputo Stadium, the Aztex roll into the playoffs with the second most points in the league and the No. 3 seed.

Austin's (15-7-8) regular season finale put it in position to stay in Montreal (12-11-7) for the first round of the playoffs against the Impact at 6:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday, followed by a return trip home to Austin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at House Park. Saturday night's game is the first playoff game ever to be hosted by the Aztex.

Anthony Le Gall scored Montreal's first goal as he managed to defeat the Aztex offside trap, took one touch and scooped in a shot off the outside of his foot. The goal was his first on the Impact.

Just three minutes after the goal, the game took a serious turn for the worse for Austin when Patterson was shown a red card for unsporting behavior, putting the Aztex down a man for the rest of the match. Without the help of one of its two forwards, the Aztex mustered just one shot on goal in the first half, and five overall in the game.

Perhaps Austin's best moment in the match came on the defensive side of the field, where much of the contest was played, when Jay Needham temporarily saved a second goal by clearing a shot off the line after Gallardo was beaten.

The effort went for naught shortly thereafter in the 87th minute when Leonardo Di Lorenzo played a perfectly placed free kick to Rocco Placentino, who blasted a volley into the net with his left foot.

Montreal finished the regular season winning five of its last six games, while Austin has won just one of its last six.
