Leaders take on clubs one game back in standings

Published on April 12, 2005 under National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

THE teams topping the NFL Europe League standings after two weeks of the 2005 campaign will have the chance to create some early-season breathing space as they face the two clubs closest to them in the rankings in Week 3.

The Cologne Centurions (2-0) kick off Saturday night's action by playing host to a Frankfurt Galaxy (1-1) team buoyed by last week's come-from-behind defeat of Amsterdam.

An hour later, the Berlin Thunder (2-0) will go looking for their seventh regular season victory in a row when they go on the road for the first time in 2005 to take on the Amsterdam Admirals (1-1).

The final contest of Week 3 sees the Hamburg Sea Devils (0-2) make history by playing their first game at the AOL Arena against a Rhein Fire (0-2) smarting from back-to-back losses to open their campaign.

The race to Yello Strom World Bowl XIII has only just begun but Week 3 could reveal a lot more about the runners and riders racing for glory in June.

The action gets underway in Cologne, Germany, as the hometown Centurions look to maintain their winning start to the 2005 campaign.

Head coach PETER VAAS says: "It was good to win against Rhein but it was far from easy. It was a heck of a battle. We didn't turn the ball over and we took it from them twice and that was very important."

Facing the Centurions is a Galaxy side that overturned a two-touchdown deficit to see off Amsterdam in Week 2.

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES says: "Our guys played their hearts out and it showed a lot about the character of this team. They fought back and fought hard."

The defending World Bowl champion Berlin Thunder may have won 12 of their last 13 regular season contests dating back to Week 10 of the 2003 campaign, but they will be out to play a much cleaner game in Amsterdam having been flagged 17 times (one short of the record set by Frankfurt at Scotland on April 13, 2003) against Hamburg.

Head coach RICK LANTZ says: "I was very concerned by the number of penalties we had and many of them came in critical situations. That's upsetting – there was a loss of poise on our part.

"But we hung in there and found a way to win. It was a game where we got to see how we handled adversity and we did a pretty decent job."

Hosting the Thunder is an Admirals team that let a 14-0 lead slip during last weekend's loss to the Galaxy.

Head coach BART ANDRUS says: "We played well in the first quarter but the second half was terrible. It was a great example of a team beating itself. I think our guys got a little over-confident. There is a fine line between playing with confidence and still having humility. They crossed the line."

Saturday evening also sees the Hamburg Sea Devils make their home debut at the AOL Arena, where they will hope to put the disappointment of two losses by a combined three points behind them.

Head coach JACK BICKNELL says: "We didn't make some plays in a close game last week and the team that makes them in tight contests usually wins. There is no question we have the effort and desire. This is a hard-working group of kids and you won't hear me complaining about this team."

The Rhein Fire will be keen to get their season back on an even keel, starting with this weekend's contest in Hamburg.

Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK expects vast improvement and says: "We started 1-3 in 1999 and won something like five of the last six and I felt we were the best team in the league. If we work on our mistakes, we'll be up there with everyone else."

Sea Devils to make home debut at Hamburg's AOL Arena

AFTER two hard-fought losses on the road, the Hamburg Sea Devils will make their home debut at the AOL Arena on Saturday night against Rhein.

And Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL can't wait to get started in front of his team's own fans and feels Hamburg can kick-start their season against the winless Fire in a passionate sports city.

After seeing his Sea Devils lose 24-23 in Cologne and 15-13 in Berlin, Bicknell says: "It's great to be going home. We need to get our season started this week and I'm looking forward to our first game in our new stadium.

"We have been on the road two weeks in a row and we need to get home and get our fans behind us. We want to start our own winning streak, beginning at home to the Rhein Fire next week."

As the new home of the Hamburg Sea Devils, the AOL arena becomes the 21st venue to host an NFL Europe League game.

The state-of-the-art stadium – which opened in 2000 - has served as home of the Hamburger SV soccer club and staged concerts featuring The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. As well as seating for 55,000 fans, the venue includes 50 luxury boxes and 2,100 business seats.

Sea Devils General Manager Kathrin Platz says: "We can't wait for our first home game. And we are sure we will leave the two tough losses behind and come out of our first ever home game with a win against the Rhein Fire. The fans in Hamburg are great and they have left a great impression on the team and me."

Despite being on the wrong end of the opening two games of the season, Bicknell remains positive about his Sea Devils team and is confident they can turn their fortunes around.

He says: "We're still in the hunt. It's my job to make sure nothing negative influences our players but that has not happened. Everything is positive.

"We're continuing to work and get better. My players give a total effort. I wish we had done better in some areas but we lost two games on the road by just three points."

NFLEL FACTS: Home opener

Hamburg will be hoping to make a good impression in their home opener. Of the three previous single expansion teams, all have lost their first game at home by at least 10 points. Ohio lost 17-6 to Sacramento in 1992, Berlin were beaten 48-14 by Scotland in 1999 and Cologne lost 20-10 to Frankfurt in 2004.

100-yard rusher usually means a victory in NFL Europe League

WHEN AHMAAD GALLOWAY rushed for 161 yards while leading the Frankfurt Galaxy to victory in Week 2, it confirmed the long-held theory in the NFL Europe League – running the football continues to be the safest route to victory.

Following Galloway's heroics against the Amsterdam Admirals, the combined record of teams with 100-yard rushers rose to 69-20 since 1995 – a winning percentage of .775.

By contrast, teams with 300-yard passers have a losing record of 16-22 (.421) during the same time period.

That could explain a recent offensive trend in NFL Europe. Over the past four seasons (2001-2004) there have been just eight 300-yard passing days by NFLEL quarterbacks. During that same period, running backs have topped the 100-yard mark on 41 occasions.

Combined records of NFLEL teams when they have:

100-yard 100-yard 300-yard

rusher receiver passer

2005 1-0 1-0 0-0

2004 6-1 7-4 1-2

2003 7-5 4-3 2-1

2002 11-2 5-5 0-1

2001 7-0 7-7 0-1

2000 3-3 10-10 3-1

1999 11-1 8-12 2-2

1998 4-3 7-4 1-2

1997 5-2 9-5 2-1

1996 6-0 10-10 3-7

1995 8-3 7-9 2-4

Total since 69-20 75-69 16-22

1995 (.775) (.520) (.421)

While running the ball effectively during the regular season bodes well for NFLEL clubs, it does not necessarily equate to World Bowl success in June.

Far from it, in fact, as only two teams have won World Bowl after leading the league in rushing yards (Scottish Claymores in 1996 and Rhein Fire in 1998).

Last year's champion, the Berlin Thunder, ranked second in rushing yards but did top the league in passing yards.

Flags fly on busy weekend for NFLEL officiating crews

IT was the kind of weekend that leaves head coaches tearing their hair out in frustration and officiating crews with well-worn flags as the six NFLEL teams were penalized 77 times in the three Week 2 games.

Leading the way – and setting an unwanted record – was the Berlin Thunder and Hamburg Sea Devils, who combined for an all-time high 31 penalties, breaking the record of 27 set by the Frankfurt Galaxy and Scottish Claymores on April 13, 2003.

Berlin was flagged 17 times – one short of the record 18 set by Frankfurt in Scotland in 2003 – while Hamburg was called for 14 penalties.

Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ says: "I thought it was a well-officiated game and I wouldn't dispute the number of penalties called. We had too many penalties and that was upsetting."

There were 23 penalties in Sunday's Rhein Fire-Cologne Centurions contest, with the hometown Fire being flagged 15 times to Cologne's 8.

Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says: "Penalties killed us. We can't have that. We were overcoming those penalties late in the third quarter but it caught up with us in the end."

Also concerned about his team's penalty situation was Centurions head coach PETER VAAS, who adds: "A bit of it might be down to inexperience. These guys have not played much and some have not played for a while so that can mean sloppy play. It is early in the year."

Saturday's meeting between the Amsterdam Admirals (11) and Frankfurt Galaxy (12) also saw 23 flags thrown.

After seeing his team give up a 14-0 lead en route to a 23-14 loss, Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: "There were a lot of penalties and it seemed like ours came at crucial times. I am very concerned about the number of them."

The 77 penalties called this weekend cost the six NFLEL teams a total of 590 yards.

NFLEL FACTS: New territory

Following Hamburg's 15-13 loss in Berlin, Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL saw his all-time regular season winning percentage drop to .500 (61-61) for the first time in his career. Bicknell opened his career by guiding the Barcelona Dragons to a 4-0 start and an 8-2 record in 1991 and had never dropped to .500 or lower in 13 seasons until last weekend.

McCready grabs national record; Climbs all-time charts

SCOTT McCREADY, of the Hamburg Sea Devils, caught 8 passes for 88 yards last week to become the leading national receiver in NFL Europe League history.

McCready – the only Brit to win a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 2001 New England Patriots – raised his career figures to 114 catches for 1,231 yards and 6 scores. He broke the records for receptions (107) and receiving yards (1,157) set by former Scottish Claymores wide receiver SCOTT COUPER (1995-2001, 2003-2004).

McCready played for the Claymores from 2002-2004 before joining the Sea Devils for the 2005 campaign.

He says: "It's cool to break those records. I wasn't really aware of them during the game. I didn't set a target to get to them or anything. I was saying the whole time that if I concentrated on that stuff, I wouldn't be focusing on the things I need to in order to be ready for the next game."

Couper called NFL Europe's league headquarters on Monday morning to pass a message to McCready, saying: "I would like to congratulate Scott for breaking my records. He did it a great deal quicker than me – it took me nine years – and that shows his quality.

"He has NFL pedigree and has really made that slot position his own in Hamburg's offense. He has established himself as one of the best receivers in NFL Europe and I wish him all the best for the future.

"Records are there to be broken and I am happy for Scott. I will just try to hang on to my touchdowns (12) record for a while, although I think Scott will get that one as well in the future."

McCready needs 12 receptions to tie former London Monarchs running back Judd Garrett and move into the top three of all-time on the NFLEL receiving charts. Former Barcelona Dragons tight end Demetrius Davis stands 37 catches ahead of McCready in second place on the all-time rankings, while Frankfurt Galaxy fan favourite Mario Bailey is out in front having recorded 252 career receptions from 1995-2000.

Returning vets proving worth

A HOST of returning NFL Europe League veterans made big plays for their respective teams in Week 2 action.

Leading the way was Offensive Player of the Week AHMAAD GALLOWAY (San Diego Chargers), who carried 31 times for 161 yards and a touchdown during the Frankfurt Galaxy's 23-14 defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals.

Also making contributions for the Galaxy were safety RAYMOND PERRYMAN (Jacksonville Jaguars) and linebacker KEVIN DERONDE (Dallas Cowboys), who registered 4 and 3 tackles respectively. Perryman played for Amsterdam in 2002, while DeRonde was a Barcelona Dragon in 2003 and a member of the Berlin Thunder in 2004.

A pair of returning veterans were influential in the Cologne Centurions' 23-10 win over the Rhein Fire. Quarterback KEVIN THOMPSON (Buffalo Bills) scored on 2 touchdown runs, while league-leading wide receiver CARL MORRIS (San Diego Chargers) caught 7 passes for 81 yards. Morris was with the Centurions in 2004, while Thompson last played in NFL Europe with the Galaxy in 2001.

Thompson says: "It feels great to be 2-0 and I think our running game is coming along now so we feel pretty good about ourselves."

All three of the Berlin Thunder's takeaways during their 15-13 victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils came courtesy of returning veterans.

Cornerback WILLIE FORD (Indianapolis Colts/Berlin 2004) intercepted a Ryan Dinwiddie pass in his own end zone to end the first half, linebacker JAMAL BROOKS (Cleveland Browns/Scotland 2001) forced a second half fumble that was recovered by team mate Michael Harden and cornerback JERMAINE MAYS (Indianapolis Colts/Berlin 2004) came up with a game-winning pick at his own 30-yard line with 54 seconds remaining.

Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ says: "We have seven guys on our roster who played with us last year and Jamal Brooks played under (defensive coordinator) Jim Tomsula in Scotland in 2001.

"Those veteran guys who know how we do things around here can head off things that would irritate me and make me blow my top. I'm not talking about on the football field, but with regard to the way we act on the road, in hotels and how tidy we leave our locker room after a game. They can make sure the other players take responsibility for their actions.

"On the field, our returning veterans are doing a heck of a job. We drafted some of them and protected others because we wanted them back with us. We knew more about them than some of the other players in the allocation and free agent pools."

History favours 2-0 teams in race for World Bowl berths

THERE is a lot of football to be played before the teams competing for championship glory in Yello Strom World Bowl XIII will be known, but history suggests a quick start to the season can be very beneficial.

Since 1995, 16 teams have made 2-0 starts to a season. Those clubs have advanced to World Bowl 11 times, winning on five occasions.

During that same period, 16 teams have started the year 0-2 and only one club – the 2002 Berlin Thunder – has reached World Bowl.

Those off to 2-0 starts in 2005 are the Berlin Thunder and Cologne Centurions, while the Hamburg Sea Devils and Rhein Fire are winless after two weeks of the new season.

Despite the lack of 0-2 clubs going on to reach World Bowl in the past decade, Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL says: "Somebody will come up with a statistic to say you can't win World Bowl after starting 0-2. There's always statistics like that out there, but we're still in the hunt. You can't go 0-6 and win World Bowl but we're still very much in the race, despite being 0-2.

"I'm frustrated that we are 0-2 but there's nothing we can do about that now and we have to move forward and get better and we're continuing to work towards that. I like our effort. I like the way our players approach things and how they practice."

Being first to find end zone a key to success in 2005 season

THE 2005 NFL Europe League season may only be two weeks old, but a key statistical trend has formed in the opening six games.

The team that scores the opening touchdown has won five of six games this season.

In Week 1, Berlin, Cologne and Amsterdam all scored the first touchdowns of their respective contests and all ended up winning on opening night.

In Week 2, only the Amsterdam Admirals scored the first touchdown and lost as they failed to capitalize on a 12-yard scoring pass from GIBRAN HAMDAN (Seattle Seahawks) to wide receiver RUVELL MARTIN (San Diego Chargers). The Admirals opened a 14-0 lead before Frankfurt fought back to win 23-14.

NFLEL FACTS: Home advantage

Of the six NFL Europe League games played this season, five have been won by the home teams. Amsterdam, Berlin and Cologne were successful on home soil in Week 1, while Berlin and Frankfurt came out on top in front of their own fans in Week 2. Only the Cologne Centurions – against the Rhein Fire last weekend – have won on the road this season.

NFLEL FACTS: TD Breakdown

A total of 22 touchdowns have been scored this season- 13 through the air, 8 rushing and 1 on an interception return. At this stage last season, 29 TDs had been scored.
