
Law Announces Coach Staff

LAREDO, Texas â Wednesday afternoon the Laredo Law announced their coaching staff for the upcoming 2004 af2 season. The staff will have a local flavor with Laredo resident and United High School football coach Mark Soto working with the Law. The Laredo Law 2004 af2 season begins April 3rd, with the home opener set for April 23rd at the LEC. Call the Law ticket office at (956)-726-GAME (4263) or log onto www.laredolaw.com.
"I feel like we have a terrific staff in place," said Law head coach Scot Maynard. "We have a young energetic staff that is very knowledgeable. They have a lot of ideas and I want them to express those ideas and be themselves."
Mark Soto â FB/LB & Special Teams
Soto is currently the assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator at United High School in Laredo. Soto played four years at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri from 1991-95. He was a first team All Heart of America conference selection as a linebacker and was selected as the team defensive MVP his senior year. He graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education. Soto made the dean's list three times during his academic career. He played at Judson High School in Converse, Texas. Soto began his coaching career at Glasgow High School as an assistant track coach. He has been an assistant football coach at Poteet High School, Seguin High School, Calallen High School, and Holmes High School in San Antonio.
Sam Garza â QB/WR/DB & Co-Offensive Coordinator
Garza played quarterback at UT-El Paso for four years from 1983-86. The 38-year old played two seasons together with Law head coach Scot Maynard while at UTEP. He is the UTEP career leader in completions (483), second in attempts (812) and yards (6,164). Garza is also the single season UTEP leader in the completions (258) and yards (3,140) and is second in single season attempts (410), completion percentage (.629) and touchdown passes (26). Graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology. In 1987 was an 8th round pick by the Seattle Seahawks. Played in three games with St. Louis during the 1987 NFL season. Played with the Canadian Football League Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1988-94. Won a CFL Grey Cup championship in 1990. Played in the 1992 and started the 1993 Grey Cup championship game. Finished his playing career with the CFL Ottawa Roughriders in 1995. Spent the last four years coaching quarterbacks at UTEP from 2000-04. Prior to that he worked two seasons as a quarterback and receivers coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL in 1998-99. Was a graduate assistant coaching defensive backs at UTEP in 1996, then coached wide receivers in 1997. DOB: 7-10-1965
Jim Beverly â OL/DL & Strength Coach
Beverly is the offensive line and head strength coach at Pikeville College in Pikeville, Kentucky. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at East Tennessee State University. The 26-year old played four years at ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee from 1995-99. Beverly was a two time All- Southern Conference selection as an offensive lineman and was an NSCA All American. He graduated with a B.S. in Public Health with a concentration in Community Health and an Athletic Coaching Minor. He spent time in training camp with the Carolina Panthers in 2000. In 2001 he played with the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe. Beverly spent the 2002 season with the af2 Cape Fear Wildcats. DOB: 12-20-1976.
The Law begins training camp on March 17th.
In four short seasons the af2 has nearly doubled in size from 15 teams to 26. arenafootball2 promotes a fan friendly attitude with autograph sessions on the field for the home team after each game. The af2 and the AFL strictly adhere to a Fans Bill of Rights which is unique to any major sport.
