Latham Earns Player of the Week

July 7, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, July 7, 2003) - San Diego's Christine Latham has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending July 6, 2003. Latham scored all three Spirit goals in two hard-fought ties on the road against San Jose on July 2 and Philadelphia on July 5.

A member of the Canadian national team and first-year WUSA player, Latham scored three goals in two games to lead the Spirit into third place in the WUSA standings. Latham's first goal came on a header from the edge of the six-yard box in the 43rd minute of the San Jose game on Wednesday, July 2. Trailing in the final minute of the game, Latham slid into a ball crossed through a crowd of CyberRay defenders and flicked it past goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene to tie the score 2-2.

Latham provided an encore to this performance three days later, scoring the Spirit's lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Philadelphia. Down 1-0 in the 80th minute of play, the 5-foot-9 Latham connected with a cross to head the ball into the right corner of the net to draw the match even. Latham has four goals and two assists for 10 points in 2003 and has started 12 of the 13 games she has played. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.

Latham captured the MET-Rx Player of the Week title by a landslide, receiving 18 first place votes and 28 second place votes, for a total of 64 points. Others who received votes were Carolina's Danielle Slaton, New York's Jaclyn Raveia, Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper, Carolina's Venus James, Boston's Heather Aldama, Philadelphia's Stacey Tullock and New York's Justi Baumgarott. MET-Rx is the official protein-based sports supplement of the WUSA.
