Lancaster JetHawks News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. - Bryan Muniz delivered a tie-breaking two-run single in the eighth inning and the JetHawks held on for a 6-4 victory over the High Desert Mavericks in Game 1 of the South Division Finals on Saturday night in Adelanto.
Muniz leads the club with eight runs batted in over four playoff games. His clutch hit put the JetHawks up 5-3. Trent Woodward followed with a bloop RBI single into center to cap a three-run eighth inning.
The Mavericks drew within two on Josh Morgan's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth after a Carlos Arroyo double. Andrew Thome was called upon for the final out of the eighth inning and he induced a pop up by Michael De Leon, who was representing the tying run.
High Desert brought the tying run to the plate once again with one out in the ninth, but Thome got Juremi Profar to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. It was Thome's first save this postseason.
Albert Abreu (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance of the playoffs. He struck out three and allowed one run in two and two-thirds innings. Elieser Hernandez started for Lancaster and surrendered three runs on four hits in five innings.
High Desert struck first in the second inning. Jairo Beras triple into the left field corner with one out and Carlos Arroyo followed with an RBI single. The JetHawks immediately evened the score in the top of the third. Kyle Tucker led off with a walk and Christian Correa followed with a single. With Tucker at third with two out, Myles Straw beat out a grounder to short for an infield single.
In the fifth inning, the Mavericks re-took the lead with back-to-back RBI singles by Jose Trevino and Jairo Beras. Once again, the JetHawks responded right away. With one out in the sixth, Johnny Sewald doubled. Osvaldo Duarte followed with a two-run homer to left center field, his second of the playoffs.
Brett Martin started for High Desert and took a no-decision. The left-hander struck out nine in five and one-third innings. Shane McCain (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for the Mavericks.
The best-of-five series continues on Sunday night at Heritage Field in Adelanto. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs will start for High Desert. The JetHawks have yet to announce their starter. First pitch is 5:05 p.m.
