Late Lakeshore Rally Drops Pit Spitters One Game Back

Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters carried a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning Monday night, but Toufic Khabie delivered a two-run double to lift the Lakeshore Chinooks to a 5-4 comeback victory at Turtle Creek Stadium.
Combined with a Royal Oak win, the loss dropped Traverse City to 19-12 and one game behind the Leprechauns in the Great Lakes East second-half standings. Five games remain in the regular season.
Traverse City capitalized on two Lakeshore errors to score twice in the first inning.
Jacob Kucharczyk came home on an error before Ethan Guerra added an RBI single, collecting his 57th RBI while appearing in his league-leading 67th game of the summer.
The Pit Spitters extended their advantage to 3-0 in the third when Zach Kucharczyk scored during a double-steal attempt.
Traverse City starter Nathan Webb held the lead through four innings, allowing one earned run.
Lakeshore pulled even in the fifth. After Webb exited, the Chinooks delivered a two-run double against Noah Reeves to tie the game at 3-3.
The Pit Spitters answered in the bottom half when Zach Carlson drove an RBI single, restoring a 4-3 lead.
Traverse City used Cody Freitas, Josh Klug and Jake Ickes over the remaining innings, but Lakeshore broke through against Klug in the eighth.
With two runners aboard, Khabie drove a two-run double to center field, giving the Chinooks their first lead of the night at 5-4.
Lakeshore reliever Nate Ciemny protected the advantage, completing five innings out of the bullpen while allowing one earned run.
He took over for starter Dylan Weekly, who worked the opening four frames.
Traverse City was unable to answer over the final two innings, falling one game back in the second-half race.
The Pit Spitters and Chinooks will meet for the final time this summer Tuesday night at Turtle Creek Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
