MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin - A goal by Ian Bennett with just 1:55 to play in the fourth quarter lifted the Milwaukee Wave to a 6-5 Major Arena Soccer League win Friday night in Milwaukee.
It was the second goal of the game for Bennett, who leads the MASL in goals with 17, and who extended his consecutive games goal scoring streak to 38.
The Tropics scored all five of their goals in the second quarter, including four within a stretch of just three minutes to erase a 4-1 deficit and take a 5-4 lead to the half. However, the Tropics offense fizzled after that, and did not score in the final two quarters.
The Tropics did actually score twice in the final period, but both goals were overturned on video replay, including the potential equalizer by Victor Parreiras whose header was originally called a good goal on the field, but then reversed on replay when officials determined the game clock had struck zero before the ball crossed the goal line. A second goal was taken off the board when Florida was blue-carded for having too many men on the field before the goal was scored.
Milwaukee and Florida both have 19 points to sit atop the East Division standings, but the Tropics (6-4, with one overtime loss) have played three more games than the Wave (6-1-1).
Florida got two goals from Victor Parreiras, one on a penalty kick, and single scores from Ricardo Diegues, Thiago Freitas, and Brenno Olivera. In addition to Bennett's pair, the Wave got goals from Marcio Leite, Shawn Azcueta, Daniel Mattos and Derek Huffman.
This was the first of a five-game road trip for Florida, who will be in Harrisburg on January 28, Dallas on February 4, Kansas City on Feb. 10 and St. Louis on Feb. 11. The next home game is Sunday, February 19 against Kansas City.
Tickets for all home games are available starting at just $7 per game by calling the arena box office at 863-834-8111. Although tickets are also available online at www.rpfundingcenter.com, service fees are significantly higher through Ticketmaster as opposed to calling the box office directly. Tickets are also available on game day at the box office.
