Last Week around the Leagues

This past week the Canadian Football League kicked off its 108th campaign after last season was cancelled due to COVID-19, two American Hockey League teams filled head coaching vacancies, and Minor League Baseball's Beloit Snappers opened their new ballpark - ABC Supply Stadium. Highlights from this week are from the Canadian Football League, American Hockey League, Western Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, High-A Central League, Double-A Northeast League, Low-A East League, Major League Soccer, National Women's Soccer League, United Soccer League Championship, United Soccer League One, Big3, NBA G League, Premier Lacrosse League, Major League Rugby and American Ultimate Disc League.


Canadian Football League

The first CFL touchdown this season was a beauty.

American Hockey League

The New Jersey Devils announced it has named Kevin Dineen as Head Coach of the Utica Comets. Dineen, the third head coach in Comets' history, will lead a returning group of Associate Coach Sergei Brylin, Assistant Coach Ryan Parent, Goaltending Coach Brian Eklund, and Video Coach Adam Purner to make up the Utica Comets 2021-22 Coaching Staff. Dineen, 57, last served as head coach of San Diego (AHL) for the Anaheim Ducks organization during the previous two seasons, posting a 56-36-9 record and a three-game playoff appearance in 2021 (1-2-0).

The Hershey Bears announced that Scott Allen has been named the 27th head coach in franchise history. Additionally, the club has announced that Steve Bergin has been hired as an assistant coach. Allen, 55, brings 25 years coaching experience to Hershey. In his accomplished career, Allen has been behind the bench for over 1,800 games at the NHL, AHL, and ECHL levels. He joined Hershey's staff as an assistant coach in 2019, working under Spencer Carbery and helping the Bears to the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the American Hockey League's regular season champions in 2020-21.

The American Hockey League Board of Governors has approved the qualification rules and format for the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs. A total of 23 teams will qualify for postseason play when the 2021-22 regular season ends on April 24, with five rounds of playoffs leading to the crowning of a Calder Cup champion.

Western Hockey League

Tri-City Americans General Manager Bob Tory announced that the team has hired Americans alum and co-owner Stu Barnes as the team's new Head Coach. Barnes, 50, began his hockey career with the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey league in 1986 before jumping to the WHL the following season. After one year with the New Westminster Bruins, Barnes relocated with the franchise to Tri-City for the 1988-89 season.

NHL Draft 1-On-1 Dylan Guenther - Edmonton Oil Kings forward Dylan Guenther was selected ninth overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2021 NHL Draft.

North American Hockey League

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced the game schedule for the 18th annual NAHL Showcase, which will be held from September 15-18, 2021, at the Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota. All 29 NAHL teams will play between three and four regular-season games at the Showcase, which is one of hockey's most prominent and popular events of the entire season and has become the 'Greatest Show on Ice.'

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

The Saint John Sea Dogs have named former NHL forward and New Brunswick native Gordie Dwyer as their new Head Coach. Dwyer, a five-year veteran of the NHL began his coaching career with the Junior 'A' Summerside Western Capitals in 2009 before leading them to a MJHL Championship in 2011. He would go on to coach the PEI Rocket/Charlottetown Islanders for four seasons before coaching professionally in the KHL and the NLA.

NHL Post Draft Interviews - Rimouski Oceanic Zachary Bolduc - was taken in the 1st round - 17th overall by the St. Louis Blues.

NHL Post Draft Interviews - Shawinigan Cataractes Xavier Bourgault - was taken in the 1st round - 22nd overall by the Minnesota Wild.

NHL Post Draft Interviews - Halifax Moosheads Zachary L'Heureux - was taken in the 1st round - 27th overall by the Nashville Predators.

National Women's Hockey League

The countdown to Season 7 is officially underway with the National Women's Hockey League announcing its full 2021-22 regular-season schedule. A total of 60 games will be played over a 19-week period with all six teams competing 20 times including 10 home and 10 away contests balanced evenly with four games against each opponent.


High-A Central League

Huge crowd flocks to Beloit Snappers first game in their new stadium - ABC Supply Stadium

Double-A Northeast League

The Somerset Patriots (51-32) made history with the franchise's first-ever no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Bowie Baysox (49-33) at TD Bank Ballpark. Luis Severino, Shawn Semple and Ron Marinaccio combined to put up zeros throughout the game, the one blemish was a walk with one out in the ninth inning. The three struck out 11 batters in the game.

Low-A East League

Top White Sox prospect Jared Kelley surprised his parents, John and Liz, with a beautiful thank you of paying off their home. His girlfriend, Julianna Castellano helped capture the moment.

American Association

The Board of Directors of the American Association of Professional Baseball has approved a plan to expand the 2021 post-season schedule with a play-in game that will pit the second and third place clubs in each division against each other for the right to advance to the North and South Division Championship Series.


Major League Soccer

FC Cincinnati announced that the club and general manager Gerard Nijkamp have parted ways effective immediately. The club will begin the search for a permanent successor immediately. Nijkamp served as the club's general manager since May 30, 2019, guiding the team to a 7-20-10 regular season record.

United Soccer League Championship

The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 15 of the 2021 regular season, with El Paso Locomotive FC forward Luis Solignac voted Player of the Week after recording three goals across two contests that helped lead Locomotive FC to a pair of victories in the week's action.

Women's National Basketball Association

Three more gold medals are headed back to the Valley as the Mercury trio of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Skylar Diggins-Smith won gold in Tokyo with the USA Women's National Team. Already the greatest women's basketball player of all-time, Taurasi won her fifth Olympic gold medal (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2021), joining fellow American Sue Bird as the only athletes in basketball history to reach five. Griner won her second gold medal (2016, 2021) and Diggins-Smith earned her first.

NBA G League

The College Park SkyHawks announced Steve Gansey as the team's head coach. Gansey was most recently head coach of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League from 2015-20, where he recorded a 123-120 mark and became the club's all-time wins leader. He was the associate head coach of the Canton Charge (of the NBA G League) in 2014-15 after spending the prior five years on the Mad Ants' coaching staff.

Jalen Green shines in Summer League Debut. Jalen Green scored 23 points, had five rebounds, drilled four three-pointers, and dished out a pair of assists in his Summer League debut with the Houston Rockets. Green, the No. 2 pick in this year's NBA Draft, is the first player in history to be drafted out of the NBA G League.
