Larquier's Blast, Mowatt's Arm Lead Glory to Victory

CHANTILLY, VA -- Sara Larquier's first-inning grand slam was more than enough for Taryne Mowatt to earn her first career professional victory as the Glory downed Philadelphia 4-1 on Sunday night.
Mowatt, who had worked 6 2/3 innings on June 14 at Akron, threw a complete game, her longest outing of the year, striking out six en route to the victory. The only run scored against Mowatt was an unearned run in the fourth inning when Sharond McDonald scored on an error by Courtney Bures. Mowatt's earned run average dropped by half a run to 2.05.
Larquier's blast came in the first inning of Megan Gibson (7-3) who had just the one bad inning. LaDonia Hughes led off the game by getting hit with a pitch that appeared that it might have struck the bat first. After a conference with the three umpires, Hughes was awarded first base. Nicole Barber came up and attempted to put down a sacrifice bunt but beat the throw at first to put runners at first and second. Oli Keohohou walked before Amber Jackson reached on a fielder's choice forcing Hughes at the plate. Larquier was the next batter and delivered the grand slam down the left-field line.
The teams are back to being tied in the top spot in the league as both sport a 22-13 record on the 2008 season. The teams complete the first half of this series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Westfield Softball Complex before a day off to travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the final four games of the series.
