LandSharks Look to Rebound after Second Loss in a Row

The Lake Charles LandSharks came off of their Week 8 BYE with a 28-21 loss to the Houma Bayou Bucks in Week 9. This was the second loss of the season for the LandSharks, both of which came at the hands of the Bucks. Turnovers were again the key to the game, as Houma did not turn the ball over, while the LandSharks had two. Despite being behind the entire the game, the LandSharks had opportunities to win. Down 23-15 with 6 minutes left in the game, the LandSharks scored on a 2-yard plunge by Mike Warren making the score 23-21. The LandSharks' 2-point conversion attempt was intercepted and returned by Bucks DB Terrell Sutton to make the score 25-21. The Bucks kicked a field goal with 3:04 left for a 28-21 lead. The Bucks then recovered the ensuing kickoff and ran 6 plays eating up 1:37 of the clock. The LandSharks defense blocked the field goal attempt and the LandSharks had the ball at the Bucks 18 yard-line with 1:22 left in the game. The LandSharks fumbled on first down, threw incomplete on second down, was sacked on third down, and completed an 11-yard pass on fourth down and 17. The Bucks then took a knee to end the game and the LandSharks comeback attempt.

The LandSharks struggled on offense gaining 74 yards on 43 plays with only 3 first downs and 1 touchdown. LandSharks QB Ted Robison finished the game 9 of 27 for 35 yards and 1 interception. The LandSharks were led offensively by K Clint Sanford with 15 points (5 field goals) and RB Byron Allen. Allen ran for 25 yards on 6 carries and had 4 receptions for 24 yards. WR Freddie Harrison made his debut with the LandSharks Saturday night against the Bucks. Harrison had 1 reception for 11 yards.

The Bucks opened the scoring with a Michael Burks 5-yard touchdown run and did not look back as they led throughout the game improving their record to 5-3 and 4-2 in the Atlantic South The LandSharks allowed 2 more touchdowns, both coming on passes form QB Herb Tyler to WR Kenny Causey. K Chris Stropolo added two field goals and Bucks DB Terrell Sutton returned a two-point conversion 50 yards for the score. The Bucks also recovered two onside kicks. The LandSharks defense blocked 3 field goal attempts and kept the team in the game. The LandSharks were led defensively by Butch Monticello with 8.5 tackles. The LandSharks host the Oklahoma Crude Saturday night at the Reef for Military Salute Night. The Crude are 0-7 (0-4) and are coming off a 60-28 loss at the hands of the Tennessee RiverHawks. Although 0-7, the Crude are putting up over 35 points per game.

This Saturday night, May 17th will be Military Salute Night at the Reef. Wayne Toups will make a special guest appearance and the first 500 fans will receive an inflatable red, white, and blue hammer in honor of our country and the Hammerhead Booster Club. Next Saturday, May 24th the LandSharks will make a run for the border to Laredo, Texas to face the Tennessee RiverHawks. The Lake Charles LandSharks are still on top of the Atlantic South with a 5-2 overall record and a 4-2 division record. The Drillers, who are coming off a BYE, are also 5-2 (4-2). The LandSharks hold the tie-breaker with the Drillers beating them 61-20 in Week 6 and will play again on May 31st. The Houma Bayou Bucks are only a half-game back with a 5-3 (4-2) record.

The LandSharks continue to make their presence felt in a number of league statistical categories. As a team, Lake Charles ranks third in net points: +15.00 points per game, eighth in points scored: 46.29 points per game, and third in points allowed: 31.29 points per game.
