
Laing Named Pirates Equipment Manager

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League announced that Ben Laing has been named the team's new Equipment Manager.
"I'm elated to have this opportunity to work for the Pirates and to work with such a great coaching staff in Kevin Dineen and Eric Weinrich," Laing said. "I've heard nothing but great things about the organization and I'm really looking forward to getting the season underway."
Laing joins the Pirates after spending the past two seasons in the ECHL with Fresno (2008-09) and Stockton (2009-10). The 27 year-old from Rochester, NY, who was selected as the 2009-10 ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year, will administer all equipment related duties for Portland and assist their NHL affiliate, the Buffalo Sabres, with equipment services during the NHL training camp period.
"We're excited to have the ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year, as voted by his peers, join our team," said Pirates Head Coach Kevin Dineen. "Ben comes to us with a great reputation and a strong work ethic. We are confident that he will deliver high quality service to the players in our organization."
The Pirates open their 18th season of competition, the 34th season of AHL action at the Cumberland County Civic Center, on Saturday, October 9th when the Manchester Monarchs visit the Cumberland County Civic Center for a 7 p.m. contest. The Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, are entering their 18th season as a member of the American Hockey League while the Cumberland County Civic Center hosts AHL play for its 34th season. Calder Cup Champions in 1994-95 and finalists in 1996-97, the Pirates have been home to a total of 230 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the ninth year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2009-10.
