Published on July 23, 2002 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO â Dave Berryman, president of Orlando Predators Entertainment (OPE), has received unanimous approval from the arenafootball2 Board of Directors to operate a team in Lafayette, Louisiana, as part of af2's planned expansion for the 2003 season, the league office announced today.
"We are thrilled to be able to bring Arena Football back to the fans of Lafayette," af2 Executive Director Jay Marcus said. "With Dave at the helm, we have an operating group in place that is stable, experienced and committed to the fans of the region."
OPE, headed by Berryman, already owns and operates the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League and the Peoria Pirates of af2. This is Lafayette' s second team in af2, as the city fielded a club during the 2001 season.
"The fans of Lafayette have already had a taste of this brand of action-packed football," Berryman said. "We are excited to be able to bring it back to them and are looking forward to the opportunity to build a winning football team and a strong football tradition in Lafayette."
The new club will house its offices and play its games at the Cajundome in Lafayette. More details regarding the team, including the name, mascot and coaching staff, will be announced at a later date.
af2 serves as a developmental league for players, coaches and officials with teams in small- to mid-size markets throughout the United States. The 2002 ArenaCup Playoffs begin the first weekend of August, culminating with the ArenaCup Championship Game (presented by Built Ford Tough) on Friday, August 23, with a possible shift to August 22, depending on the site of the game.
