
LA Riptide Meet Outlaws In Conference Duel

CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Friday, July 13, 2007 - The Los Angeles Riptide (5-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), still unbeaten on home turf after a 16-12 win versus the San Francisco Dragons on June 30, will look to continue their reign as the first place team in the Western Conference as they take on the second place Denver Outlaws (4-3) at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, July 14 at 5:00 p.m.
RIPTIDE VS. DENVER IN 2007: Attackman Terry Riordan had five goals and attackman Spencer Ford added two goals and six assists for the Los Angeles Riptide who were defeated by the Denver Outlaws, 18-15, at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver on June 9. The Riptide took their only lead of the game at 6:31 of the opening quarter thanks to a goal from Riordan, but the Outlaws scored four straight goals to close the quarter with a 4-1 lead. Ford assisted on all three Riptide goals scored in the second quarter, and his third assist led to a goal from midfielder Graham Gill at 5:26 of the quarter. Gill's goal pulled the Riptide to within one at 5-4, but Denver responded with the last two goals of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead after 30 minutes of play. The Riptide and the Outlaws each scored four goals in the third quarter, but still the Riptide trailed the Outlaws 11-8 after three quarters. The Riptide matched a season high with seven goals in the fourth quarter, and two of their goals were scored shorthanded (Riordan and Ford), but the Outlaws scored seven goals of their own in the quarter to make the final score 18-15 in favor of the home team.
RIPTIDE'S LAST GAME RECAP (JUNE 30 VS. SAN FRANCISCO): Bud Light MVP/attackman Terry Riordan collected a franchise-high seven goals, and Spencer Ford and Graham Gill finished with four assists each, as the Los Angeles Riptide defeated the San Francisco Dragons, 16-12, at The Home Depot Center on June 30. The Dragons struck first in the opening quarter, but the Riptide quickly collected goals from attackman Wes Green, Riordan and the team's goal-scoring leader, attackman Michael Watson, to take a 3-1 lead. The Dragons tried to gain momentum, but the Riptide held on to a 5-3 lead at the end of the quarter. Riptide midfielder Matt Casey collected his first goal as a member of the Riptide at 12:05, and despite a two-point goal by the Dragons late in the quarter, the Riptide kept an 8-6 lead at the end of the half. Riptide defenseman Greg Bice got things going for the Riptide in the third quarter with his tally at 24 seconds and Riordan netted his fifth goal of the game at 7:02. The team also added goals from Watson (11:06) and Lindsay (12:16) to give the Riptide a 12-7 lead after three quarters of play. The Dragons couldn't overcome the home team in the fourth quarter and the Riptide finished with a 16-12 victory over the Dragons.
DENVER'S LAST GAME RECAP (JULY 4 VS. CHICAGO): Attackman Brendan Mundorf scored a game-high five goals and added an assist as the Denver Outlaws won their second straight game, a 22-14 victory over the Chicago Machine in a Western Conference game at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Midfielders Mike Law and Jeff Sonke each scored three goals with an assist, while midfielder Brian Langtry added three goals in the victory.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Riptide, with a record of 5-2, enter this weekend as the first place team in the Western Conference...With a record of 3-0 at The Home Depot Center, the Riptide are one of only two teams in MLL who are unbeaten on home turf (Philadelphia is the other)...The Riptide already have more wins at home this season than all of last season when they posted a record of 2-4 at The Home Depot Center...Attackman/midfielder Spencer Ford continues to lead the league in assists with 27 and is third in points with 36...Attackman Terry Riordan broke a franchise record for goals with seven against San Francisco on June 30...Attackman Michael Watson has collected at least one goal in each of the Riptide's seven games this season...The Riptide acquired attackman Chazz Woodson from Boston in exchange for midfielder Kevin Dougherty and a fourth-round selection in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft on July 10...The Riptide have yet to defeat Denver in their two-year history.
