Los Angeles KISS News Release

LOS ANGELES (June 28, 2014) - Fighting tough to the very end, the LA KISS (3-11) fell short 46-64 to the Spokane Shock (8-7) Saturday evening at the Honda Center in Anaheim. With the result the KISS remain just one game back of the final wild card spot while the Shock clinched a playoff berth.

Erik Meyer threw for 214 yards and six touchdowns, with Nicheren Flowers recording 11 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown on the night for Spokane. Donovan Morgan led the KISS with 6 catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Brandon Thompkins also added 8 catches and a 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter.

LA KISS opened up the first quarter with a sack from recently acquired Michael Spicier. However, within just minutes after kickoff, quarterback Erik Meyer connected on a 34-yard pass to Mike Washington giving the Shock an early lead. With just over 6 minutes remaining in the quarter, Garcia threw to Thompkins to tie it up (kick by Spencer is good). Spokane immediately responded on an 11-yard toss from Meyer to Rashaad Carter. The attempt to follow by Rowan is good bringing the score to 7-14 (4:45). A few plays later, Garcia passes to Morgan who runs the ball 29-yards into the end zone for a touchdown (kick failed) 13-14.

Coming out strong again in the second quarter, Meyer connects to Carter on a 17-yard pass (21-13). Shortly after, Garcia's pass is intercepted by Terrance Sanders that is later fumbled by Carter and recovered by LA's JC Neal. Bryson Kelly sacks Garcia on the next play and a forced fumble recovered by Diyral Briggs gives the Shock the ball back. Meyer runs the ball in for a touchdown (kick is good), 28-13 (8:35). Spokane closes out the quarter with a final pass from Meyer to Nicheren Flowers, 35-13 at half.

A 2-point safety for the Shock came early in the third. (7:55) Meyer threw a 13-yard sideline pass to Flowers and then rushed it up the middle to the LA one-yard line. Leave it to lineman Rory Nixon to push it in for a Shock touchdown (kick is good). LA responds with a 38-yard pass from Garcia to LJ Castille with a touchdown by Morgan to follow (2 pt conversion is good), 21-43 (4:23).

The fourth quarter proved to be explosive as the two teams exchanged touchdowns back and forth in a high-scoring battle. Rookie back-up quarterback Kenny Guiton threw for 21 yards in the fourth with touchdown passes to Castille and Morgan and added a 9-yard touchdown run in the final minutes of the game. Meyer also recorded touchdown passes to Carter and Truesdell with a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the fourth. But it was Brandon Thompkins 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that stole the spotlight to end the game.

Next week Los Angeles is back at the Honda Center and will look to take on the San Jose SaberCats on Sunday, July 6 in Week 17 of the 2014 Arena Football League season. Kickoff is set for 5p.m. (PDT). Single game tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com or the Honda Center box office.
