LA Giltinis add Scottish Fullback Glenn Bryce to International Roster
January 6, 2021 - Major League Rugby (MLR)
LA Giltinis News Release
The LA Giltinis have added attacking punch, size and an educated kicking boot at fullback with the signing of Glasgow Warriors regular Glenn Bryce.
Today's announcement that the former Scotland Sevens weapon is heading to Major League Rugby expands the playing roster at the Giltinis with another significant international asset.
Bryce, 29, will arrive in LA fresh from campaigning with the Warriors in the PRO14 and European Rugby Champions Cup at the elite end of rugby in Europe.
The 6'2" (1.88m), 214lb (97kg) fullback is a classy recruit with strong bonds already with fellow Giltinis DTH van der Merwe and Adam Ashe from playing days at the Warriors together.
"The greatest excitement for me is coming to a new league and a new club where you can drive the culture and make it our own from the very start," Bryce said from Glasgow.
"Making memories is a big motivation for me and getting to do that with a fresh start in a city with such a sporting history as LA is massive.
"I got to play at the Las Vegas Sevens with Scotland so I understand how crazy and loud American fans can be when they get into their rugby."
Bryce is an experienced fullback with stints at Jersey (2012-13), Doncaster (2013-14), Glasgow (2014-16), Edinburgh (2016-18) and Glasgow (2018-20), a second time, since joining the professional ranks.
The former Scotland Under-20s player is an abrasive back who enjoys the physical contact and has the footwork to make the most of chances in attacking plays.
Bryce hails from Alloa, a small town in the central lowlands of Scotland, just four miles (6km) from where close friend Ashe grew up in Alva.
"Both Adam and I are from small towns and made it into pro rugby which shows anyone can do it," Bryce said.
"So many up-and-coming rugby players in the USA will be thinking about that right now when they look at the opportunities that the Giltinis and MLR are creating.
"American kids who watch the Giltinis are going to want to be a part of it and I love that we'll get out in the community and build new connections with rugby.
"When I look at the players and coaches that the Giltinis have signed, we'll be making a statement on the field from the first game."
Bryce was a member of the celebrated Scotland team which beat New Zealand for the first time at sevens in 2017 en route to the London Sevens title at Twickenham.
Off the field, the qualified joiner is already in the LA mood because he admits that Selling Sunset had him hooked during COVID-19 lockdowns as one of his Netflix series staples.
The hit reality show weaves a script through the unaffordable houses, cutthroat agents and the drama of the LA real estate market.
"Glenn was tipped to us by Wallabies coach Dave Rennie (the former Warriors coach) who said he rated him a starting fullback at Super Rugby level," Giltinis head coach Darren Coleman said.
"He's a big, rangy fullback with a long kick and someone looking for a new challenge in a good professional rugby career."
The Giltinis will kick off their MLR campaign on the weekend of March 20, 2021, with tickets being available by the end of this year.
