LA Galaxy News Release
CARSON, Calif. - The LA Galaxy, in partnership with Major League Soccer and CAA Sports, announced today that the club will host Manchester City of the Premier League on Sunday, July 24 at The Home Depot Center as part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge. This is the third consecutive season in which the Galaxy will host a major international friendly at The Home Depot Center, playing AC Milan to a 2-2 draw in 2009 and defeating Boca Juniors 1-0 there last season.
The match against City will kick-off at 1 p.m. and is one of two matches the Galaxy will play in the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge. The Galaxy announced last Friday that the club will take on Copa del Rey champions Real Madrid for a second consecutive year on Saturday, July 16 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
"It was very important to our club to host an international friendly here at The Home Depot Center for our fans, especially those who come to this stadium week in and week out to support the Galaxy. We are very excited to welcome Manchester City, a team that is challenging for the FA Cup and that has just secured a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League," Galaxy President Tom Payne said. "Our stadium offers fans the unique experience of feeling like you are right on top of the action. We all remember the amazing atmosphere inside the stadium two years ago for our match against AC Milan. We look forward to having the same type of crowd on July 24."
The game against Manchester City is included in Galaxy full season ticket plans as Bonus Game 2. A special ticket pre-sale will take place in the near future for all current Galaxy ticket plan holders wishing to add additional tickets at a discounted price. Additionally, fans who wish to purchase a 2011 full season seat or mini-plan that includes Manchester City can do so at this time. A 3-game plan is also now available, including the Galaxy's match against Manchester City on July 24 and two regular season MLS matches through August, starting at $81. Single Game tickets will go on sale to the general public in the near future.
"We saw the enthusiasm for football in America when we went out there last summer, it was a really good tour for us," said Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. "This summer is going to be just as exciting for all of the City players, coaches and hopefully a good number of our fans, who will come out to see us play."
Manchester City currently sit in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League and defeated city rival Manchester United last month to qualify for the FA Cup Final against Stoke City at Wembley on May 14. On Tuesday, the club clinched the Premier League's fourth and final berth in next season's UEFA Champions League by beating Tottenham Hotspur, 1-0. City have seen their status as one of the top clubs in England grow exponentially in recent years, culminating in qualifying for the current format of the Champions League for the first time in club history.
Under the management of Italian Roberto Mancini, City have assembled a roster of stars that include 2010 FIFA World Cup champion David Silva (Spain), England internationals Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and James Milner, Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong and Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko, as well as former Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure and a host of other stars from around the world.
