L.A. Riptide One Win Away From MLL Playoffs

August 12, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Los Angeles Riptide News Release

CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Saturday, August 12, 2006 - With one game remaining in its inaugural Major League Lacrosse season, the Los Angeles Riptide is one win away from making the playoffs, needing a victory over the Western Conference leading Denver Outlaws in the regular season finale to secure a playoff spot on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 4:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center Track and Field Complex.

The Riptide enter the match-up with Denver on a four game winning streak and now own a 6-5 record, tied with San Francisco for second place in the Western Conference and in contention with the Dragons and the New Jersey Pride for the league's final playoff position. A Riptide victory over Denver clinches the playoffs for L.A., but a loss does not definitely end the season for Los Angeles. If the Riptide and Dragons both fall and the Pride wins, the playoff spot will be determined by tiebreakers. San Francisco hosts the winless Chicago Machine at 1:00 p.m. PT and the Pride travels to Long Island for a 4:00 p.m. PT game.

With the top four teams in Major League Lacrosse making the playoffs, the Riptide is playing for the right to make the New Balance MLL Championship Weekend a home affair, as The Home Depot Center will host the MLL Semifinals at 6:00 p.m. PT and 8:30 p.m. PT on Aug. 25 and then the MLL Championship Game on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 2:00 p.m. PT. Tickets for New Balance Championship Weekend are on sale now and start as low as $20. Fans can save on a two-day package, and discounts for groups of 10 or more are available. For more information, call 1-866-4LAX (1-866-452-9849) or visit www.lariptide.com.

The Riptide is led by the reigning MLL Offensive Player of the Week, attack man Andrew "Buggs" Combs, who scored five goals for L.A. in a victory over San Francisco on Aug. 5. However, Denver is a formidable opponent, leading MLL with a 9-2 record and looking for its third straight win over L.A. The Outlaws defeated the Riptide 22-11 on July 1 in Denver and then defeated L.A. 17-7 on July 8 at The Home Depot Center. Denver is fresh off a 17-13 victory over Chicago on Aug. 5 and is led by Matt Brown (37 goals, 45 points) and Mike Law (31 goals, five assists).
