Los Angeles Riptide News Release
CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Friday, June 8, 2007 - The Los Angeles Riptide (2-1) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) hope to bounce back from last week's 19-14 loss in Boston and boost their record to 3-1 when they travel to INVESCO Field at Mile High to take on the Denver Outlaws (1-1) on Saturday, June 9 at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
RIPTIDE VS. DENVER ALL-TIME: The Denver Outlaws beat the Riptide three times in 2006. In the first game at INVESCO Field at Mile High on June 1, which served as the first half of a home-and-home series, the Outlaws doubled up the Riptide and took a 22-11 victory. The Riptide found themselves behind early and never recovered, despite multiple goals from Michael Watson (2 goals) and Sean Lindsay (3 goals) in that game. The Riptide faced Denver again the very next weekend on July 8 at The Home Depot Center, but unfortunately did not come up with a better result. After only scoring two goals in the first half, the Riptide were downed by the Outlaws, 17-7. The final game of the series was held at The Home Depot Center on August 12. With a win, the Riptide would have made a playoff appearance in their inaugural season, however the Outlaws shut down the Riptide offensively and claimed a 13-9 victory to sweep the season series.
RIPTIDE'S LAST GAME RECAP (JUNE 2 AT BOSTON): Bud Light MVP Mickey Powell collected three goals and seven points to lead the Boston Cannons past the Riptide, 19-14, before a crowd of 9,375 at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on June 2. The Riptide, who were led in scoring by Michael Watson (5 goals, 7 shots, 8 points), saw their record drop to 2-1 after three MLL games this season. For the first time this season, the Riptide failed to score in a quarter and they trailed the Cannons 15-8 through three quarters of action. The Riptide mounted a late comeback by scoring six of the first eight goals in the fourth quarter to pull to within three goals at 17-14, but the Cannons closed the scoring with two more tallies to post the 19-14 win. Riptide goalie Mickey Jarboe started the contest. He allowed 15 goals on 22 shots before he was replaced by goalie Matt Russell in the final quarter. Russell allowed four goals on nine shots in 15 minutes of play.
DENVER'S LAST GAME RECAP (JUNE 2 AT CHICAGO): Denver midfielder Jeff Sonke recorded four goals - including a two-point tally - but it was not enough as the Outlaws lost at Chicago's Toyota Park 19-17 on June 2. For the Machine, the win snapped a 13-game losing streak that dated back to last season. Brendan Mundorf and Matt Hanna each finished with three goals and one assist in the loss for the Outlaws and Josh Sims added a team-leading four assists.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Look for Riptide attackman Terry Riordan (Hopkins '95) to take on a bigger offensive role for the team starting this weekend. Riordan, a left-handed shooter, has two goals on eight shots through three games this season while splitting time on the left side with attackman Andrew "Buggs" Combs. The Riptide on Thursday (June 7) acquired a second-round and a third-round selection in the 2008 Collegiate Draft from Washington for Combs. In addition, the Riptide open this weekend's MLL action as the first place team in the Western Conference and head coach John Tucker has a record of 6-2 in his last eight MLL games coached dating back to the 2006 season.
