Rhein Fire News Release
PETE KUHARCHEK has resigned as head coach of the Rhein Fire, bringing to an end an eleven-season association with the NFL Europe League that has seen him win two World Bowl rings.
Kuharchek has spent the last ten seasons with the Fire, including the last five as head coach. He joined the Fire as defensive coordinator under head coach Galen Hall in 1996, having previously served under Hall as defensive backs coach of the Orlando Thunder in 1992. He helped the Fire win the World Bowl in 1998 and 2000 and coached in four other championship games, with Orlando in 1992 and with the Fire in 1997, 2002 and 2003.
"I have had ten wonderful seasons with the Fire," said Kuharchek, "but I feel that the time is right to move on. I will take with me fantastic memories of working with outstanding coaches and players and the incredible support of the Fire fans. I have been involved in some memorable games and seasons with the Fire and I wish the team many more in the future."
NFL Europe League Director of Football Operations MIKE CHAN said: "Pete has been a magnificent servant for the league and Rhein Fire. He has played a significant part in the development of the Fire into one of our most successful franchises and we wish him great success in the future."
A former linebacker at the University of Tampa, Kuharchek's coaching career has included stints at several colleges and a spell in the USFL with the Tampa Bay Bandits.
He earned a reputation as one of the best defensive coaches in NFLEL history, with his defensive units finishing on top of various statistical categories on their way to winning a pair of World Bowls. As head coach, he led the team to back-to-back championship games in 2002 and 2003.
