June 7, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

The boys in Old Glory Red just completed a three-game homestand and now, the squad is about to hit the road for the next two straight matches.

Most recently, Republic FC fell 3-1 to Orange County SC but all eyes are on a swift return to winning ways on Wednesday night when the squad heads to Utah for this season's lone showdown against Real Monarchs during 2021 regular season play.

Key Moves

The 2019 USL Championship title-winners missed out on the 2020 playoffs, but the club made plenty of positive moves in hopes of earning a spot in this season's postseason.

After being the only club in league history not to make the playoffs after lifting the title, the Salt Lake City side secured a pair of attacking wingers - Malik Johnson and Max Mata. Johnson joins from Tampa Bay Rowdies was he was a key contributor during the Floridian club's quest towards Eastern Conference supremacy last year. Mata is a promising midfielder from New Zealand who has already logged his senior international debut.

Another quality midfielder Monarchs managed to bring to Utah was Ibrahim Bance who is on-loan for the 2021 campaign. During a Week 3 fixture against San Antonio FC, Bance bagged his first goal and earned a spot on the USL Championship Team of the Week.

Monarchs also bolstered its backline, securing defender Kyle Adams from Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. During his USL career, Adams has amassed over 60 appearances during league play.

Real Monarchs This Season

Through its first five games, Real Monarchs are still in search of its first win on the year.

After five fixtures, Monarchs has managed to secure two points - a 2-2 draw to open the season against San Antonio FC in Texas on May May and a 1-1 result at home against Austin Bold on May 21.

The second match of the season ended in favor of LA Galaxy II in Utah, 2-0, followed by back-to-back matches against Bold. The first fixture was the draw and five days later against its fellow Western Conference Mountain Division opponent, the clubs clashed again with Austin securing a 2-0 win in the Lone Star State.

Most recently, Monarchs was handed a 1-0 loss to New Mexico United at home on June 4. Isidro Martinez found the back on the net with less than ten minutes of regulation to hand Monarchs its third loss of 2021.

Head-to-Head

In the all-time series, Real Monarchs has the upper hand with six wins from 14 fixtures.

Sacramento has downed Monarchs three times in the all-time series with the last victory logged in the 2017 USL Championship Playoffs with Republic FC leaving Utah with a penalty shootout win. The match ended 1-1 after regulation but SRFC bested the Salt Lake City club 3-1 in the penalty shootout to march into the next round.

Both sides met during the 2021 preseason with Real Monarchs visiting Sacramento and Republic FC secured a 2-0 win on April 24. Cameron Iwasa opened the scoring for the Indomitable Club in the first half before netting his second of the match in the closing minutes.

Last Time They Met

Besides the recent preseason friendly, the last time these clubs met during competitive play was late October 2019 with Monarchs claiming all three points after a 3-0 win.

The match was the last regular season game before the 2019 postseason where Monarchs later went on to eventually lift the title.

Wednesday's midweek match against Real Monarchs in Utah is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
