Knighthawks travel to New York looking to clinch playoff berth

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Knighthawks conclude their three-game road trip this weekend with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the New York Titans. The game will be broadcast on WYSL 1040-AM and wysl1040.com. The game will also be televised on Sportsnet New York.

Rochester can clinch a playoff berth with a win over New York on Saturday. The K-Hawks can secure a postseason spot with both a Toronto loss to Minnesota tonight and one Chicago loss this weekend. The playoff berth would be Rochester's 13th in the team's 13-year history, which is a National Lacrosse League record.

The trip to Nassau Coliseum is Rochester's first since the 2002-03 season, when the Knighthawks defeated the New York Saints 18-17 on January 25, 2003.

The contest is the second meeting between the two clubs. The last time they met, the Knighthawks beat the Titans 22-18 on January 27th. That evening, Rochester forward John Grant registered a league and franchise record 15 points (9+6). His nine goals also tied his own record that he set on February 18, 2005 against Philadelphia. Former K-Hawk Casey Powell registered one goal and 10 assists for New York.

The Knighthawks enter the game with a 9-2 record and a two-game lead in the East Division. Rochester is riding a franchise-record seven-game winning streak. In their last game, the Knighthawks defeated the Chicago Shamrox, 15-12, at Sears Centre on March 17th. Rochester enters the game first in the league in goals (169), power-play goals (50) and power-play efficiency (60.98). John Grant also leads the NLL with 36 goals and 75 points. Scott Evans is fifth in the league with 64 points and Shawn Williams is tied for ninth with 58. Further, Steve Toll leads the NLL with 131 loose balls. He also leads all defensemen with 27 points (12+15). In addition, goalie Pat O'Toole has a league-best 419 saves and he is tied for the top spot with nine wins.

The Titans are coming off an 11-8 loss to the second-place Buffalo Bandits last Saturday. The game this Saturday is the fourth and final game of New York's four-game homestand. The Titans are 1-2 in their last three games, defeating the Toronto Rock 13-10 on March 3rd. The Titans are currently in last place in the East Division with a 2-9 record. Powell leads New York with 68 points (22+46) in 11 games.

After the game in NY, Rochester returns home on Saturday, March 31st for a 7:35 p.m. showdown against the East Division rival Philadelphia Wings. The game will be carried live on WYSL 1040-AM and wysl1040.com. The game will also be televised on VERSUS on Monday, April 2nd at 10:00 p.m.

The night will feature a 1980s theme with prizes and music dating back to the hay day of Tesla and Bon Jovi. Big Hair Night also includes a prize for the best mullet. Further, the first 10,000 fans will receive a thunderstick courtesy of Time Warner Cable. The first 1,000 fans will also take home a Regy Thorpe card from Nathaniel's Pub. Prior to the contest, kids can participate in a lacrosse clinic from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. (grades seven to 12).

Knighthawks Milestones: - Rochester is riding a franchise record seven-game winning streak, which dates back to January 20th. - Forward Ken Millin has a career-high 24 assists and 35 points. He needs just one more goal to tie his career-best with 12 in a season (2003-04). - Last week, Stephen Hoar became the first Knighthawk to record 600 faceoff victories. - Rochester Knighthawks' Regy Thorpe, Chris Schiller, Pat Dutton, Pat Cougevan and Scott Ditzell were named to Team USA for the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. The tournament will be held at the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from May 14th to 20th. - Defenseman Regy Thorpe is two penalty minutes away from passing former Philadelphia Wing Tom Phair for fifth place on the NLL's all-time penalty minute list. Thorpe has 330 PIM.

Knighthawks Notes: The Knighthawks lacrosse team raised nearly $1,100 for CURE Childhood Cancer Association on Tuesday night at their inaugural "Tip a Knighthawk" charity event. The fundraiser at Bugaboo Creek Steak House, located at 935 Jefferson Road in Henrietta, brought in $1,066.27.

Knighthawks players John Grant and Chris Schiller worked behind the bar and collected tips for CURE. The Rochester Knightingales dance team also made an appearance and signed autographs and sold raffle tickets. Further, Bugaboo's mascot, Moxie the Moose, and the Rochester Americans mascot, The Moose, were on-hand to entertain guests. Everyone in attendance received a Bugaboo Creek gift bag containing Moose and Knighthawks items.

The event was the second fundraising initiative between the Knighthawks and CURE Childhood Cancer Association. The Knighthawks also held a Teddy Bear Auction at The Blue Cross Arena on February 24th to benefit CURE. The animals, which were created by the lacrosse players at Build-A-Bear Workshop in Eastview Mall, raised $4,406. With the two events, the Knighthawks raised $5,472.27 for CURE this season.
