New Haven Knights News Release


UPCOMING WEEK: The Knights finish the season with two out of their last three games at home. New Haven hosts the Adirondack IceHawks on Thursday night at 7:05p.m. New Haven travels to Glens Falls, NY on Friday to complete the home-and-home and the season series. Game time is 7:35 p.m. The Knights are back at home to finish the season on Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday when they host the Elmira Jackals at 7:35 p.m.

3/20 NEW HAVEN 7, BC 4: Seven different players scored goals as New Haven defeated BC for its second consecutive road victory. The Knights scored four goals in the second period and Ken Boone notched the game-winner at the 19 minute, 42 second mark of the period to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. Alexei Lazarenko and Kenzie Homer scored goals in the third. Glenn Stewart and Kelly Popadynetz each had a goal and an assist and Tom Menicci added two assists in the victory. G Ray Fraser turned away 33 of the 37 shots he faced for his 12th victory of the season.

3/22 ASHEVILLE 6, NEW HAVEN 5: The knights lead 4-3 after two periods but were outscored 3-1 in third as Asheville defeated New Haven for the third time in four meetings. Todd MacIsaac tied the score at the seven minute, 34 second mark of the third and Mike Payne gave the Smoke their first lead of the game at the 8:33 mark. Curtis Menzul scored what proved to be the game-winner with 8:42 remaining in the game. Chris Cerrella brought New Haven within 6-5 with his power play goal at the 16:14 mark of the third. Doug Sheppard, Kelly Popadynetz, Paul Harvey and Alexei Lazarenko each added goals and Ray Fraser stopped 30 shots in the loss.

3/23 NEW HAVEN 9, KNOXVILLE 1: Glenn Stewart broke a 1-1 tie with five minutes, 25 seconds remaining in the first period as New Haven rolled over Knoxville. Stewart and Kenzie Homer each registered hat tricks in the game as New Haven scored three goals in the second and four in the third. Billy Newson, Kelly Popadynetz and Chris Cerrella also added goals in the victory. G Olie Sundstrom stopped 31 shots in his first start with New Haven.

3/24 NEW HAVEN 4, ASHEVILLE 2: Doug Sheppard's goal one minute, 30 seconds into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie as New Haven clinched a playoff spot with its victory. Billy Newson scored his 25th goal of the season with his team on the power play with 10:08 remaining in the game to push the Knights' lead to 4-2. G Olie Sundstrom stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn his second consecutive victory. Glenn Stewart and Rich Spiller also scored for New Haven while Jason Disher, Chris Winnes, Kelly Popadynetz and Chris Cerrella each added assists.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:

PLAYER: Glenn Stewart - Scored five goals and added four assists helping his team to a 3-1 record last week. Had a goal and an assist in a 7-4 victory at BC on Wednesday. Notched three assists in Friday's 6-5 loss at Asheville. He then registered a hat trick and added two assists in Saturday 's 9-1 trouncing of Knoxville. He finished the week with a goal in Sunday's 4-2 win at Asheville and a + 5 plus/minus rating.

GOALIE: Olie Sundstrom - Was 2-0 as he played in three of the Knights four games last week. He stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 9-1 win over Knoxville on Saturday and followed with a 34 save performance in Sunday's victory over Asheville. Had a .956 save percentage and a 1.48 GAA.
