Philadelphia, PA, February 11, 2009 - The Philadelphia KiXX announced today that forward Hewerton Moreira underwent successful Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) reconstruction on Tuesday, February 10. The procedure was performed by Dr. Arthur Bartolozzi, MD of 3B Orthopaedics at Pennsylvania Hospital.
Moreira suffered the injury in the second quarter of the club's victory versus the Massachusetts Twisters on February 7 and will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) season.
"Hewerton's reconstruction was successful and I expect him to make a full recovery and return to play next season," stated Dr. Bartolozzi, MD.
The Santos, Brazil native is currently ranked first among all NISL scorers with 47 points. Moreira, who posted a season-best 10 points on five two-point goals versus Monterrey on January 25, has ranked first in the League for three consecutive weeks and 11 overall this season. The 29-year-old forward was the League's first two-time winner of the NISL Player of the Week accolade and was also named the NISL Player of the Month for his performance throughout the month of December. Moreira had recorded at least one point in each of his nine games played this season, his first with Philadelphia.
"The injury to Hewerton is very unfortunate," stated KiXX Player/Coach Don D'Ambra. "He is a valuable player for our team and will be missed on the field this season. We wish him a fast and healthy recovery."
Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
